Politcial Research

Deffo last in.

Guesses 1983 is Rebecca's birth year, that makes her 23, you finish a degree at 21 in the UK so you've spent two years on a Masters.
Please define "successful" in this context.

Would it not depend on what part of the year I was born in?

Actually an almost intelligent response, well as the internet is a huge part of the UK culture research in it is not for a students personal gain it is part of a larger academic debate that will benefit society as a whole.
Be sure to tell me how I'll personally benefit from you asking dumb questions about the internet and what benefits I might enjoy from you gaining a Masters Degree.

Now I said something so childish to see if I got a response and guess what I did...
Just a thought, but has your "Politcial Research" on the internet got as far as comprehending the meaning and functionality of discussion boards?

If people had not done research maybe society would not have progressed and we would all be in the dark ages, then again maybe there is a point to be made there society isnt in the best state

Can the internet help change that, who knows, that's what i'm trying to find out.

To whoever said no offence- none taken- if i was i wouldnt still be here trying to understand this whole internet community thing.

I am a little argumentative so if people take pot shots (particualrly sterotyping students) I take em back

As much as me making an arse of myself well wouldnt be the first time- i;m only human

Obviously a Guardian reader.

Was it Dr Spooner who called you a shining wit?

Thank you all for your time today its been interesting, your comments will make a welcome addition to my research.
As for my views to display them would be unethical (oops)

I seem to have learnt a lot about the type of people who use these internet forums, interesting indeed... I don't think Habermas' 18th Century public sphere is to be recreated on the internet as many hoped, oh well... One way to kick democracy whilst its down.
By the way do you dislike students because you have a crappy job and aren't quite intelligent enough to get into University?
"Yes"
Thought so... like i said the types of people who use forums- an interesting addition to my research.
Okay, you've not made the best start in terms of making friends and influencing people. ;) However, if you want to discuss Habermas, communicative action and all that stuff why don't you just post something about it. You might be surprised what you get back.

If I was to have become with Habermas' I would have excluded people but as you ask.
I think that Habermas' public sphere could not only be reborn on the internet but go further after all the 18/19th century public sphere was only rich men in coffee houses (ie not on a global scale)
However perhaps the internet is to big to come to any agreement
My original questions were designed to discover how people use the internet, because if they dont discuss the key issues (and jsut shop on amazon all day) how will things ever change.
Also does the internet not exclude many areas of society?

I cant influence people i'm a researcher and to be fair i didnt know what to expect as all sites are different- however by my outrageous comments I have managed to draw attention to my thread and gain a useful insight for my research for which I thank you all

There's already an absolute ton of research availble on the internet about the "digital divide," internet usage patterns and other related issues.

Have you not thought about starting there?

Here's a starter about online shopping trends: http://digital-lifestyles.info/display_page.asp?section=business&id=3468

That's really not the way to go about things, you know.

No you're not - you're a student trying to do some research that will advance your career, rather than take forward the advance of humanity. We made fun of you because you were being annoying, then we invited you to join in. You've suddenly come on all "customer service" which is intensely annoying.

Now do you want to see these puppies, or not?

the majority of my work is about democracy and Habermas' although internet access and how people use the internet is useful- the questionnaire and analuysis of forum rhetoric is a small part of my research but allows me to see if in my opinion the internet can facilitate true democracy in the Uk something we lack

If we are talking about puppies in the same way Vince McMahon does then no thanks

I never claimed to advance humanity and yes my MA is partly for self gain but I do also take my research seriously if not I would have chosen an easy subject like 'is spin bad for politics?'

As for calling my self a reasearcher I am a student and a researcher haveing conducted research about education for a profit (and that was purely about profit and career advancement)

That you 'not influencing people'? :D

Anyroad, back to Habermas: why would the democratic potential of t'internet be different to other modes of communication? Is it anonymity? Does that actually alter the kind of persona people bring to discussions?

See above for comments on influence

On democratic potential anonymity is part of it especially if you live under a totalitarian government and cant for legal reasons air you views
Also it is accessible 24hrs on a global scale- this makes it different- except amybe the phone but that has more commercial restrictions and is often 1-2-1
It is considered that people behave differently as there is little control or punishment on their views
archives of past research tells us that hope for democracy was placed on the TV, radio and newspaper and we're still not truelt democratic?
However is democracy in its purest form people power truely possible?
