Vodkas - Zubrowka is the bisongrass one, and is particularly lush with apple juice. I also like Krupnik (honey herbal vodka) which is nice with a bit of milk, or a lightly toasted coffee bean in a shot glass. These two are the best in my humble opinion, although of course you can pretty much get vodka flavoured with anything under the sun.
Polish beer is good, but the national lagers are a bit overrated. I like Okocim dark, and the Amber brewery is a real gem, but it's not a national so you have to go to the northwest.
Polish food in england and Poland is like night and day. I would never go to a polish restaurant here again after a few underwhelming experiences.
Potato pancakes (placzki ziemnaczany), hunters stew (bigos), pork escalope (kotlet schabowe), golabki (meatballs wrapped in cabbage leaves) are all divine, as are most soups on offer. Just beware of flaki (guts soup) if you are of sensitive disposition (although it too, is lush).
I can't believe nobody's mentioned dried sausage (kielbasa). They are the best in the world, and the ones they sell in the uK generally suck ass. You want to go to a big deli or covered market and have a look at whats on offer. Sublime and IMO the best of what polish food has to offer.
Anyone going to poland and Warsaw in particular should go to a Milk Bar "Bar Mleczny". They don't serve as much milk as they used to, but are basically a dead cheap fast food restaurant specialising in the national cuisine. You can absolutely gorge yourself for only about 3 quid. Just be prepared to do a lot of pointing if your polish is bad, because you will get short shrift if you fanny about.
