Police raid BBQ in helicopter

someone i know was supposed to be at this party.
apparently they made everyone leave even though some of them told them they'd been drinking and shouldn't be driving

that happens more than it should to be honest.

flip side i've known coppers break up parties and tell the obviously impaired (drugs or booze) to sleep it off for a few hours before leaving.

well, gurn it off.

I can understand the police taking an interest once evidence of noise nuisance or whatever had been obtained, but stamping out parties because they *might* turn in to something a bit more boisterous is overstepping things imo.

well quite. turn up with a noise abatement order and fail to obey you are in a whole world of fines etc. to get one, you need to be making noise of course.

... but the whole £800/generator/does-he-not-know-anyone-with-a-back-garden-ness of it all has me reaching for the :hmm: smilie
Indeed. I suspect that there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye ... and the police acknowledge that they closed it before it could even get started as if they'd let it actually become a problem they wouldn't have been able to without far more issues. Doesn't sound like your average birthday barbie to me ... :hmm:

And on what basis do you assume the police would be telling the truth on this after thier actions? all so honest arent they?

and what is so wrong with having a party out in the country away from other folks so you dont cause a disturbance? all the best parties ive been to have been out of the way so we can have a ball and not cause a problem.

cops said:
In this occasion, we were extremely concerned how the event had been advertised on the Internet as an all-night party and it was therefore necessary to take the appropriate steps to stop the event.
Reminds me of how Blair was extremely concerned Iraq had WMD.

Reality doesn't matter, only feelings, however unjustified

I like the implication that the chopper landed and 8 cops jumped out :D

I love the smell of napalm in the.... tea time :)

Mr Poole, a coach driver, said he invited 17 family and friends and two had not even arrived by the time the helicopter was whirring overhead.
Mr Poole said he spent £800 on food and a generator.

I suspect there's a tad more to the story than The Metro article would have us believe.

Can you barbecue caviare?

I could see how rent of a genny and posibly some sound equipment, plus enough food and drink to easily satisy 17 people with a bit left over for the next couple of days could run up to £800....

I hear there is a shortage of helicopters in Afghanistan. Perhaps in support of the 'war effort' our boys in blue could sacrifice a few of their surplus police helicopters that are obviously in need of genuine work. They could always play with their new toys the drones to keep an eye on people having barbecues.

*If* this was correctly reported, I find it really quite disturbing.

Yesterday, police insisted they were right to end the party. 'We were extremely concerned how the event had been advertised on the internet as an all-night party,' a spokesman said.
Since when are all night parties illegal ? Can the police legally stop anything which they (claim to) think *might* cause a problem? It's this "we decide what should be allowed" attitude which I find disturbing. The police should just enforce existing laws, not end up choosing what *they* deem acceptable behaviour.

Why had he spent £800 on food and a generator if it was for 17 of his friends?

Aye, that's the bit that's got me concerned. Under £50 per head! That's going to hardly cover the lobster, and leave very little for canapes or desert.

Good god, I hope that figure doesn't include drinks as well!

There is a bit of an unfortunate history of parties getting out of hand in Mid Devon. A couple of years ago a private family party in a mansion in Bovey Tracey got publicised on a radio show by accident and hundreds of gatecrashers turned up and wrecked the place when the family tried to stop them getting in.

The Devon police are on alert in the summer for such events. There are often all night barbecues on some beaches with sound systems and attended by hundreds of people. Sometimes these beach parties are organised by or for the groups of foreign English Language students. These students are not popular with many locals because they go around in big groups filling up the buses and sitting around not spending much money. They are teenagers looking for fun on a tight budget. Some of the locals complain a lot and it gets reported in the newspaper, picked up by the local authority and presented to the police as a problem.

People being social, taking up seats, and not spending a lot of money, what a fucking disgrace.

These people are obviously scum, why can't they just spend £80 on a saturday night in shit pubs and clubs before landing out at 2am to get a kebab and kick off a fight. I'm not against foreigners coming to the UK but they must make an effort to fit in with the local culture, when in Rome.

You can just hear that bozo: "I wa'nt doin' nuffink wrong!"

Well unless conspiracy to have a fucking party is illegal, he hadn't.

Like seriously even if it was a planned rave what the fuck is the problem and how the fuck does it necessitate police helicopters.

yeah £800 for a party of 17 people isn't that much if they are buying a load of booze, renting a generator and having food, I mean it's far more than me and my mates would ever splash out but it's hardly Posh and Becks wedding.

Short of the police coming forward with some actual grounds for this, it's impossible not to conclude that they were bang out of order here. £800 for food, a generator and booze is not an excessive amount for a 30th birthday party.

I'd be very curious as to just what legislation they used as grounds for moving the people on.

Because, despite your paranoia, the police (especially in rural areas where resources are spread very thin) are not going to waste four cars and the helicopter (albeit that that was just diverted from another task) just because some fucking party was advertised on Facebook ....

and what is so wrong with having a party out in the country away from other folks so you dont cause a disturbance?
Nothing. But not every such event has "not caused a disturbance" have they?

Reality doesn't matter, only feelings, however unjustified
It won't be "feelings" and it won't simply be the fact that it was advertised on the internet (though that may well be part of it, especially if it was advertised as a public event). There will be some objective grounds to suspect it was not what it is being alleged to have been intended as by the "victim". If there weren't, then the police will get sued ... didn't notice anywhere the "victim" mentioning that he was going to wander off down Messrs Sue, Grabbit and Runne ...
