Police get powers to hack your PC without a court warrant

One can of course protect oneself from such intrusion through the usual diligence with regards personal firewalls and AV/Spyware software etc.
unless of course the government persuades the av/spyware software companies to not pick up the police stuff...:hmm:

If the anti-terrorist police can't get through a firewall, and really want to look over your PC, they'll just get their pet magistrate to sign off on a search warrant, or wait until you're in the street, arrest you, and search your computer under Section 18 of PACE.

Not that it'll be much of an issue: I imagine they spooks can hack through most firewalls without too much trouble. The state's resources are vast. The only way to protect your digital privacy is to get these sweeping powers revoked.

*edit* Add "get the duty-inspector to sign-off on the search" to the Section 18 bit.

Well, you could encrypt everything with a strong password. Which is what I do at the moment with my laptop actually; FileVault on OS X has on-the-fly encryption of your entire home folder. I wasn't really thinking about the coppers when I turned that on, more about people nicking it, but that sort of technology is increasingly popular and common.

True, but it's an offence to withhold a password, so even if they couldn't get in they'd just charge you with that. Nice guaranteed conviction.

Lots of people (myself included) aren't remotely computer savvy enough to encrypt their PC sufficient to keep the cops out. Ironically, the people most likely to have their PC hacked with a fishing trip are the ones who genuinely have nothing to hide. Mr Bomber is going to have fearsome protection on the computer he uses between stirring his chemicals.

Punish the innocent; impotent against the guilty. Typical of our law and order situation.
