Going to review everything as live of the top of my head - don't be offended - all the submissions were ace as has already been mentioned...
No point doing a review without being honest though...
Track 05 - (that's what it was called on the zip file!) - When You Fall Asleep
Proper serious smashing energy, cocky London bird giving it large, lovely distortion and not pissing about wasting time with song length for the fuck of it. Delicious.
Not normally my kind of thing but this is done so well, it makes an excellent start to the competition.
Bumblebee -
Piss weak drums and indecipherable low end production can't hide the fact that this track has cheeky charm and a lo fi nod toward genius.
When the pads come in around 2.38 it all makes sense.
The feedback chunk at the end is proof that with a little more editing and experimentation the composer of this ditty could be making movie soundtracks and the like, its got something that much amateur music doesn't have, proper care and attention to melody and detail. Nice work.
cuts -
I want to be able to sit in a darkened room smoking sticky squidgy black, fucked up on whizz, seventeen years ago, marvelling at the pitch-cutting, the oddly left-panned rap, the transforming, sipping on a Special Brew and nodding righteously.
But I'm not able to do that these days, for various reasons.
At 2.37 it all goes a bit more logical, and the previous mash-up is all working.
Proper head-dip beats we all know and love.
Like the vinyl scrapy noise in the quiet bits. Sort out the panning.
Dave My Mind Is Going -
Going with an American theme to start, then the bass guitar (original?) and the Beck style approach to the thing is instantly successful. Piano sound is a bit weirdly muted, could do with a fresher EQ. Like the percussion though, it's organised and clever. Needs real live vocal, a female singer of similar range as the samples could twist this through to an unforgettable track. It's perverted.
I like the thing, as a whole. Could easily imagine hearing this on the radio whilst cooking or something, and wanting to know who it was by and what label...
Fashion FM -
Fuck me. That's a good intro.
Bjorkish with the hammer percussion, "Army Of Me"? but obviously not the same.
Seriously nice production from the outset.
The voice is done well. The increasing pressure on the beats as it's played, good solid and well treated sounds (hard to keep that level of bass tone sounding good, but it works here).
It's fucking filthy. You slags. I love it. Gets one of my votes!
(I Wanna Be Your) Truck Drivin' -
Instantly the vocal drives this. This is great. I need a cigarette. Back in a minute.
Dirty bass and New Orleans funeral march. What the fuck?
Dirty synth intrusions. It's building up to something dirty...
Different timing, bringing it into the low sloop, rocking, eggs are fryin'.
Oh and yes. The Orleans death march again.
This is really good, then the slowed up fucked up bit at 2.47... my goodness.
I cannot imagine how you made it go from one style to the other like that. The old car horn at the end seals this with a kiss. Glorious.
Gets the other one of my votes.
Kicks -
Rhodes piano and Carlos Santana style guitar. Don't like the vocal, I'm not here to be polite. Like the harmonies though. Lots of laid back effort gone into this.
Can't place the reed synth solo sound, but it's very well played indeed.
Good performance all-round. I like the original too much and you sound like my old vocalist and guitarist, is that you Chris??
Out Tonight -
Very nice start. Lovely beginning to the tune, layered synths.
Fuck, vocals all wrong - you sound like you're singing into a cushion - bring up the treble on the vocal track or buy a new mic, your vocal needs to be recorded to emphasise the hissing and venomous elements, it's rock after all.
It's good pub rock. Vocal is barely there - need to work on that, but the bit at 2.35 where the dischordant bleep comes in works really well, a great sound.
The guitars are good then too, at 3.04 it's a surprisingly good blend of guitar and synth. Good bassist too.
It's a real band, and as such can be forgiven for slight misdemeanors in the mix.
Rhythm and Culture -
I recognise that sample!

Nice - the intro male voice-ish choir pad sound isn't to my taste but it's well mixed.
It's building up again! Some odd distant birdy pad which is interesting.
The arpeggiation needs a bit of modulation!
Like the bits where the beats reverse at around 2.20. Is that some Ableton naughtyness?
2.55 the bassline gets interesting for a bit, then reverts back to the dub style...
The boom-tish seems to be there throughout. I like it but it ain't finished.
StarsWereFlies -
It's the same track as Bumblebee on the zip file... erm... dunno what's going on... better check my files again...
