Please recommend me some good tips for *new* breakbeat sound

breakstep is yer garagey, stripped down, bouncy sound.

138 trek is the classic breakstep tune, most of zinc's breaks stuff (usually under the name Jammin) is also breakstep. baobinga's alter ego Pablo Beatz is on similar lines.

138 trek is not breakstep, unless there are 2 different definitions of the term

'the knowledge' by toasty on hot flush, or 'food chain' by search & destroy on texture - surely that's breakstep . . .

I'm with you sam/phallcrat. '138' is breakbeat with a garagey twist.

Parallels can be drawn with dubstep but it tends to be a faster bpm with a hell of a lot more breaks - the way breakbeat should be! :)
so erm is that the same as breakcore or a bit slower?

think I know what you're getting at, not really what I play though I'll have a few bits around the place somewhere.

erm if so then there's been some relabelling going on coz it weren't breakstep when that came out, and we had zinc up to play around that time and the words breakstep never crossed any of our lips (though I think it might have been going under the daft title of UK breaks or something... goes to dig for old flyers)

good tune mind:cool:

and a solid gold, diamond encrusted, 100% pure TUNE to boot

and I've got the VIP . . .

Truth

Don't think I've heard the VIP ... got the regulation 12" though, with MC GQ (???) on it :D

Slower than Breakcore ... and not so all over the place! :)

Check out the Myspace link I posted above ... hearing it will explain it better than words ever can! :D

....you could always try playing odd drum and bass records at 33. Usually creates an interesting angle for a set.

At Bangface last Friday Knifehandchop played 'original nuttah' at 33 - worked really well actually! (especially when munted!) :D

It's identical to the original, but with the bassline reversed (if you see what I mean) . . .

no no, 138 trek is definitely breakstep.

it wouldn't have been termed that at the time, because it was one of the first tunes of it's kind (zinc is so much my idol it hurts) - a straight breakbeat with a garagey bassline. it spawned 1000 imitators, and the resultant scene was termed 'breakstep'. it looked like it was going to blow up around 2002/2003 but then kind of didn't.

toasty's "The Knowledge" isn't breakstep, it would be dubstep really. (this is a bit embarrassing because if i have any production idols they would be zinc and toasty. i could talk about them all night (and often do)). search and destroy, destructive recordings, all that stuff is essentially dubstep, but there is certainly some kind of crossover ground between breakstep and dubstep (god i make myself cringe with all this talk of submicrogenres).

the main differences are that dubstep increasingly has halfspeed elements (think back to The Knowledge - 140bpm but with kick drum on beat 1, snare on beat 3), while breakstep never does, and also that dubstep usually has a very much darker aesthetic.

sorry for the lecture :o

oh and while i'm on the rant - breakcore is basically gabba breaks.

very cut up, very heavy, very fast - like playing a techno record and a jungle record at the same time, at 190 bpm/like squarepusher would be if he was more dancefloor oriented/like aphex twin occasionally gets
