If your mates PSP is above a certain firmware (2.71 I think) or is a TA-082 model (this refers to the motherboard), then he won't be able to play games off the memory stick period.

You can check in the XBM what the current firmware is. Regarding the mobo - if the PSP has been bought recently (I think say past 3 months) then there's 99% chance of it being a TA-082 model.

There are a few good sites/forums where there will be photos of how to tell if you have a TA-082, and if not then you're in luck and you can take it from there regarding playing games of a memory stick.

Take a look at Maxconsole and PSP Hacks. Search first, as people in these places don't bother replying to stuff that has been asked 1000 times before. Also, any direct talk of piracy is frowned upon, therefore people pay lipservice and talk about backing up games they own rather than stuff they have downloaded etc.

Afterdawn is also a decent resource for console stuff (a great tech forum in general). There is a PSP subforum there. I don't particularly like the layout of the place, but people there know their stuff and they don't seem to mind piracy/bittorent talk.
