Playing a cover in a set - Crap/Not Crap

Not crap so long as it's not just a straightforward recreation of the original. If you own the song and make it sound like yours then yes, if not, then nay.

Only do it if you can put a new take on it. My first band used to do 'For your Love' by the Yardbirds. But it sounded like a Siouxie & The Banshees song the way we did it.

I did a gig last year where I was the last minute stand-in bass player and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. The whole set was covers but the finale was a medley of "Imagine", "Angels", "Let it Be" and "Hey Jude" - fucking excruciating. I can understand why the regular bassist pulled a sickie. :(

((((((seeformiles))))))

Have the other band members got out of hospital yet?

I still think that a new band, finding its niche in the live scene, is fine to play a cover. ONE cover. Except Oasis or any of the kinds of songs that you find in a 'so you want to play guitar?' type of book.
