Players you don't get

Guti is very creative. Overall not very good because he's so lazy and a gigantic twat, but his plus side isn't hard to discern.

Ibra is brilliant. 1 in 2 goalscorer + great holdup + creativity and touch. What more can you want? He certainly puts Berbatov to shame.

I totally get Ribery. He would be right up there with Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo if he didn't spend even more time diving and rolling around than they do. So he's admirably suited for German, French, Spanish or Italian football at the highest level.

Park Ji-Sung. He contributes nothing apart from selling Man United shirts to moronic asians.

Darren Fletcher. The Scottish Cattermole. He'll be exposed as the talentless thug he is soon enough.

yeah two players who played central roles in 3 league titles, 1 champions league and reaching another champions league final.

Are you an Arsenal fan per chance?

Question:

Does your confusion on this issue mean that you think that the managers of these players are *wrong* or do you think that you merely lack the information, insight or understanding to get why they are *right*?

Because I think lots of successful players are rubbish, but ultimately I defer to the expert that sees them train week-in week-out and actually puts his balls on the line by picking them. And so I assume that there is just something I'm missing.

Both Cattermole and Fletcher are good.

Park Ji-Sung is veeeeery average, and I´m not buying the "central role" shite. He´s not actively bad and he runs around a lot. But no-one really rates him do they?

Like: take Terry for example. Those of you claiming he's rubbish -- do you REALLY think that he's just pulled the wool over the eyes of a succession of the best managers in the game and held down a key place in a highly successful (and rich) club side merely by luck? Or do you think that it is possible that you are, y'know, wrong?

I remember a right-back who came through our youth system a while back called John Kennedy. It was around the time we sold Mauricio Taricco, and he was basically the only right-back at the club. He came in, played a couple of games, looked alright. Nothing special, just comfortable in that position, not noticeably bad. Anyway, a short time later we signed another right-back, Dutch guy called Fabian Wilnis (who stayed with us for about 10 years). Kennedy meanwhile never played for us again, was released a few years later, never signed for a league club and ended up with Canvey Island.

So, I dunno, I think the dividing line between good pros, and top-level players is pretty narrow in my eyes, and certainly a lot of the decisions managers make are contextual. It help Jermaine Jenas now that he had such a good reputation as a youngster. There are definitely positions on a fooball field where you can be overrated even by the best.

Bit of all of em really. Sometimes i just think the manager is plain wrong(anything benitez does for example) other times i think the player would be rubbish in most teams but do a good job for their club(deco & lampard spring to mind) and other times its because i don't get to watch them enough(every italian defender) or only watch em on tele, which doesn't do them justice.

I can think of lots of examples for each of em.

I never quite got why people would talk of Roberto Carlos as the best left back in the world at one point. He was never even in the same stratosphere as Paulo Maldini, and was arguably less than Bixente Lizarazu if you want a more attacking full back.

I think Capello likes to have options in his toolbox of players. That is why I think he will take Heskey, Crouch, Rooney and Defoe to South Africa. Perhaps also a 5th?

Central roles? They were both bitpart players at best.

And yes I'm an Arsenal fan, what does that have to do with anything? I also don't get Diaby and he plays for my own team!

I think he means that of those players currently playing in Serie A, he's scored more Serie A goals than any other. It's a fair point, but partly a reflection of the length of his career. Off the top of my head, Del Piero and Inzaghi would be the main challengers.

He took a stunning free kick.

See David Beckham for another average player that has been lauded for set piece ability.

Average my fucking arse. Most assists in a season, 6 times in a row: Roberto Carlos. AND and he's got more pace than your mum.

Beckham is/was a quality player. If he'd not fallen out with Fergie he'd have moved into centre midfield with Man Utd. I think he'd have made his own 'position/role' such as people talk about the Prlo/Milan role now. Underestimated player in my opinion.

That free kick did seem to totally cloud a lot of people's opinion of him, at least in this country. I'd have always picked Cafu ahead of Carlos if I wanted a Brazilian full back, but then I'd have had Thuram and Maldini ahead of either.

As for Beckham moving inside, he'd most likely have had to dislodged Keane or Scholes, with Giggs also able to deputise in the middle of the park.

Ji Sung Park might have been a bit part player last year but the two seasons before that he played more than a bit part.

The notion of Carrick as a bit part player is just fucking absurd though.

And I'm laughing at you being an Arsenal fan because Carrick and Park helped demolish Arsenal over two legs in Europe.:D

And you are entitled not to get Diaby all you want, after all he hasn't played a central role in an Arsenal side that has won 3 league titles back to back, and reached two Champions League finals back to back.
