Player of the 90s

Jeez, it's really diffiuclt...so i'll say Ronaldo. Forget the sad sight of the fat idiot last week and remember why everyone raved about him abnd why Inter paid so much money. Bar a career-thretening injury for Inter, I think he'd still be the best striker around.

In 96 Ronaldo was world Player of the Year. I had the pleasure of seeing him play at the Nou Camp and he's the best player I have ever seen - and i'll include Ronaldinho in that.

He had everything - pace, first touch, power, control. For 4 years he was the greatest striker.

Between 1994 and 1998 he played 111 games for PSV, Barca and Inter and scored 101 goals...no one was even close to him

Just watch and enjoy a master at work Ronaldo vs CD Alaves

thank you

Baresi was class but I suppose a defender is less glamourous
Baresi I think is probably more thought of in Italy as part of the late 80s Milan generation, with Riijkard, Gullitt and Van Basten. I know he played in the 90s too but then Pele won the World Cup in 3 decades and you'd say he was definitely there for the 60s.

Re. left-backs, Psycho would get my vote ahead of Carlos as he could take free kicks just as well and was a better tackler.

Zidane and Maldini seem to be getting the most votes here. I fully agree with the supposed lack of glamour in defenders, but perhaps sweepers go beyond this, and as such Matthias Sammer is worthy of more consideration? Also Marcel Desailly played a lot of his club football in the holding midfield role. Cafu's also the only player ever to play in 3 World Cup finals.

Cantona; no way. Yes he won a few domestic bits and bobs but never took it further. He also wasn't the fulcrum of the Leeds '02 team, as they were controlled from midfield by Strachan and McAlistair. I'd also say Schmeical, Keane and arguably Giggs were more important for Manchester United. And in terms of his position, ahead of Baggio? No way.

Off the top of my head, a 90s XI;

Schmeical
Thuram Sammer Desailly Maldini
Figo Deschamps Zidane Rivaldo
Baggio Batistuta

I thought Sammer was over-rated personally, I'd put Mark Wright and Stimac ahead of him as sweepers, and Paul McGrath purely as a defender.

Mark Wright!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One good World Cup - that's one month in the 1990's he was good. For the other 11 months and 9 years - he was SHITE!

Subs:
Solskjaer
Roberto Carlos
Ronaldo
Nedved

Zidane's the only one who's in the Pele/Maradonna/Cruyff etc bracket

For Ronaldo, Keane, Baggio and Figo you could read a Passarella, Laudrup, Garincha or Eusebio - good players, some very good, some great but they're just not the players of their era and are all eclipsed by Zinane, who's achievments alone mark him as one of the all time greats, let alone his technical abilities.

maldini is probably the closest to him.

Simon Morgan (Fulham captain) played for the club in every division.

Yes yes YES! A leader amongst men.

I saw him in every division (except Prem - I'm sure he never played in the Prem).

What a great guy, but to be honest he was never Fulham's best player - let alone the world's. But I know what you're saying. 110 per cent kinda guy.

80s surely?

Yes, but throughout the 80's he was a leggy journeyman passed from club to club, the peak of his career came in his second spell with the mighty tangerine wizards, 90-95* when he was a true legend and morphed into the superstar known as Zico Bamber - he genuinelly was fucking class.

*though he did only play twice in 94-95 and one of them games was at centre half.

That midfield couldn't play in a 3-5-2, especially when you've got Lizarazu who was an overlapper anyway. And I really find it unbelievable that people nominate Cantona for the deep-lying striker ahead of Baggio, Stoichkov and even Sheringham, who did produce the goods at internetional level at Euro '96.

That midfield could play in any bloody formation it liked!

Fair point re Lizarazu though.

Cantona. Not up for discussion.

I can't believe someone has ruined this thread (I won't go back to find out which poster, I think they're humiliated enough!) by mentioning Gascoigne. Let's pretend it never happened.

Another vote for Maldini. Another bonus - which hasn't affected my opinion - is that he has stayed with the one club throughout his career. Legend.

Did someone put Sammer and forget all about Lothar Matthaus??

I know he's German but he was bloody class...

With the ball at his feet, in defence he was.... as a cucumber.

I'm not talking about just the Premiership, a competition which wasn't actually in existence at the start of the nineties. And anyway, I'd put Shearer and Keane ahead of Cantona who, like I said, never did anything on more than one stage.

Matthaus is another who is in the unfortunate position of spanning decades, being a World Cup finalist in the eighties.

Re. Maldini's one-clubmanship, I agree it is very admirable in this day and age. However, it should be noted who that club is, providing him with everything he needed. The same goes for Raul, Del Piero and Giggs.
