Plastic Bags

They've been banned in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as they were helping f**k the water system up and make the flooding worse. Alternative: bags made from jute, cheap and they rot (I hate the term 'biodegradable').

Don't they grow on plastric bag trees, like the ones you see along the side of main roads?
I love it that plastic bags in trees are called Witches Knickers by the kids round here.....

According to a letter in today's Metro, Ireland's consumption of plastic bags has been reduced by 90% by their plastic bag tax. It saved 18 million litres of oil in the first year. Surely we should be doing something similar.

Pisses me off when they try to put all my veg in little bags at the supermarket tills.

They look all worried when I ask them not to.

I bought a belt from Primark a few years ago and when I saw her putting it into a carrier bag I told her it was OK, I would put it into the one I already had - and she said that was not allowed, they had to put it into one of theirs!

I would have said 'cancel the sale then'.

I have also taken stuff out of a plastic bag if the sales person has started to pack for me. I think they've given up on me at my local shop. They only occasionally ask if I want a bag now.

I use those 10p ones that last for ages, and a shopping trolley for tins, etc, but I only do main shopping once a month.

Rather than the reusable plastic bags, i'd prefer a couple of big string bags, not sure where to buy them though.

but yeah, the number of people who want to argue with you over you having to take one of their plastic bags for one small item is bloody rediculous.

It's to do with stopping shoplifting. The bag and receipt proves you bought it. Also try buying trainers in Footlocker without the box - they won't let you leave without the box. It's to stop the staff from thieving - before if there were any empty boxes the staff would say the customer didn't want to box - now they can't use that excuse. its wanky, TBH.

I've never understood why shops get upset if you don't want a bag - surely it means increased profits for them?

this is right (actually a stunning 93%!). i was in ireland a couple of months back and everyone brought their own shitty reused carrier bags, which for an anti-carrier warrior like me, almost brought a tear of joy to my eye :)

i'm constantly battling with shop assistants, every time i buy something i have to say "thank but i don't need a bag", and every time i get confused looks as if i'm a freak from planet weird for actually bothering to bring a reusable bag with me. *sigh*

i've been trying hard to find out why we haven't put in a similar tax in the uk, given the overwhelming environmental benefits of doing so, but i can't really find out why, other than the typical inertia of parliament. check this out:

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld199900/ldhansrd/pdvn/lds05/text/50707-01.htm

Lord Dubs (!)
"It would be the easiest thing in the world for the Government to put a tax on plastic bags, as has been done in other countries, thereby significantly cutting their use. Why can the Government not put a tax on them? It is a simple thing, and they might even make some money out of it."

Lord Bach:
"our present view is that the case for a plastic carrier bag tax is not proven on broad environmental or litter grounds"
What a silly old fart.

I think we need to start a big campaign, a web petition or something, to try and kick some sense into the parliamentary muppets who refuse to introduce a tax.

You call their bluff. What I do when someone gets all arsey about plastic bags is tell them that if they insist on putting it in a plastic bag, I'll leave the shop without buying it. Seems to work a treat. :D

There are some on these boards who dismiss such a flat tax as a regressive tax on the working classes... hmm. I tried to find the posts but 'tax' is too short a word for the search engine.

that would be reactionary codswallop! you're right - it's not a tax, it's just charging a very small price for a bag, which seems fairly normal to me.

the whole point here is that EVERYONE, regardless of wealth/social status, is able to reuse a carrier bag.
