Planning A Trip To Mexico

Sorry that turned into a long one, better go home now.... :-)

the longer the better :D

somehow i'm trying to work Tulum, Oaxaca, Chichin itzer (sp?), San Cristobal and Mexico City into a 21/2 - 3 week trip.

Needs fiendish planning :D

We did much the same (regarding planning) :D in the end we ended up dropping about 5 places because wherever you go, you want to spend so much time there. But be strong :-) we should have left Tulum after 3 days :)

The air-con buses are your friends - you could get from Playa de Carmen to Oaxaca in about 30 hours I reckon with a 1 day stop over in Chetumal (sp?) (which is near one of the biggest cenote lakes in that region)...

I think we did mexico city, merida, chichen itza and tulum in about 10 days. We flew to Merida and then got the bus to Chichen Itza which didn't take too long. Air con buses are better - it's just sweatsville otherwise. But we were there in the rainy season when it's much more humid.

I have a really nerdy book I can lend you called Ancient Sun Kings of the Americas which is great if you're interested in the mayans/aztecs etc

I'm going to dig out my pix - it's an excellent excuse this. I'm with Structaural - I'd move there tomorrow if I could :D

You might want to fit Palenque in as well - it's on the way to Oaxaca if you're coming from the East. Probably contains the best 'art' of the Mayans and contains the tomb of Pacal Votan deep inside one of the 'pyramids'.

I can see a triangle developing - something like fly to Mexico City, travel down to Oaxaca, see what's to see round there, then take our sweet time across to Yucatan and stop at interesting places on the way, then hit the Yucatan coast round Tulum and see what there is to see there, then fly back from Cancun :)

sound feasible?

Sounds like a plan :) Maybe have a chat with the Mexican tourist board for accurate travel times with the coaches, but I reckon that's about 3 or 4 days on the road. You could drive yourself which would give you more freedom, but might exhaust you as the coaches are good for sleeping...

Pah!

You can get them in the mariachi bars in Garibaldi square in mexico city, full of japanese in cowboy hats.

Cuernavaca is a waste of a day imo.

I live 1 hour away and even i can`t be bothered with it.

My top 10 (non-southern) mexican towns:

1/ Amecameca
2/ Guanajuato
3/ Cuatrocienegas
4/ Veracruz
5/ Mexico City
6/ Taxco
7/ Jalcamulco
8/ Saltillo
9/ Tijuana
10/ Malinalco

avoid:

1/ Acapulco
2/ San Miguel de Allende
3/ Cuernavaca

Well I suppose my affection for Cuernavaca may arise from too much Malcolm Lowry at an early age and the fact that I once pulled a chica caliente there. But anyway, here's my top ten:

1. San Blas
2. Tijuana
3. Mexico City
4. Oaxaca
5. Veracruz
6. Taxco
7. Cuernavaca
8. Toluca
9. Puebla
10. Puerto Escondido

Avoid:

1. Nuevo Laredo
2. Tepic
3. Zipolite

I have said it before, Cancun is hell on earth.
go for the airport ad dont hang around

No interest in Cancun at all, but Yucatan has a lot to offer so yeh, we'll be getting the hell out :)

We spent exactly 20 mins in Cancun (took that long to get from the airport to a taxi) :) Though we visited when we made friends with some dreaded (as in locks) Canadians and ended up in a 'Reggae Bar'. Never again.

If you make it to Playa De Carma (still touristy but low rise) - try and stay at least one night in Kinbe hotel - not that cheap but an amazing hotel - built around trees with a Cenote in the grounds and hammocks on the roof. It's under new management since we stayed (it had just been 'created' by a bunch of pragmatic hippies when we found it) but I think they've retained the 'style', it's like staying in a posh tree house. It's at the 'good' end (ie downtown) of the town.

They had links to the one of the main cabana places in Tulum as well...

hi, i've been in mexico 2 years ago for two weeks, we arrived in mexico city then rented a car, drove to Oaxaca, beautiful relaxed city with perfect climate. After Oaxaca we drove till the pacific coast, puerto angel sooo beautiful, the road is beautiful in the middle of the jungle but for only 200 km more or less it toke 5 hours...after 5 days on the beach we went to Palenque then back toward Mexico City with a stop in Puebla, very nice. With the car we had problems only in bloody mexico city, we got fucked by the corrupted police basically..not a nice experience but with only two weeks with a car you save time. Beautiful trip and la mota es muy buena....
