Places in London that you've never heard of before

Also there are two post-SE1 circuits beyond SE2 (Abbey Wood), which proceeds alphabetically up to SE17 (Walworth) and SE18 (Woolwich), with a new circuit starting from SE19 <struggles to remember ... :D >

Somebody's already posted the answer to the W2 - W3 conundrum.

W2 was a head district, so like W1, E1, SE1, N1, NW1 and SW1, it didn't adhere to the alphabetical order of the other postcodes. The first W postcode to start alphabetically was W3, Acton.

I have a mate who lives in "Brackenbury Village" - the area between Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush that is to the West of Shepherds Bush Road.

That must be estate-agent speak - it doesn't look very village-y.
There are all sorts of reasons to hate estate agents, but maybe they deserve a little credit for this one.

It should be remembered how much London has grown and how many villages must have been swallowed up. It is nice to think a few names have survived, and sad to think how many have simply vanished. Wonder what Broadwater was like when it was still a farm.

IIRC London had a population of 200,000 in Shakespeare's time. Blake used to walk to fields from Tottenham Court Road. Even when Dickens lived in Camden it was a separate suburban entity.

Here's some answers for those who haven't read the whole thread:

Why is Bayswater W2 and Acton W3?

W1 is the Western Head District
W2 is (was?) the Paddington Head District
the alphabetical suburban sorting offices start with W3

This thread's going round in circles.

I still don't understand why the SW and SE postcode areas start all over again halfway through. N manages to avoid this, despite having more postcodes than SW.

What do you mean?
I mean that they are alphabetical, but start over again part way through.

SE20 starts at "A" again, and SW11 starts at "B". Prior to that, SE2-19 are alphabetical, and SW2-10 are too. And then they're alphabetical after that "reset" as well.

I was on the North Circular recently amd saw a sign for Brimsdown. Brimsdown!? In all my years of living in and around London I have never heard of this place before. How can I have been here so long and still find places which haven't registered on my radar before?

I went past Brimsdown today, possibly the most industrial estated area in London. Was pleased to discover that there's a place nearby called Freezy Water!

Its just a road. Pals that live there say they live in Shepherds Bush.

lol innit I lived in West for 7 years; I don't go back often (thank heavens) but I caught a bus through there recently and recall silently giggling to myself "hehehehe... Brackenbury Village...lol" :D

I think it was William Of Walworth who explained all the London postcode stuff a few years back... should have been a sticky. ;)

Anyone else discovered names or places in London which are new to them?

Higham Hill.

Not new now, but before I moved to Ealing I'd never heard of Castlebar Park or Drayton Green (didn't miss much lol)

Still wondering what Furzedown is like, even though I live in the same borough (probably because I'm too lazy to go anywhere south of Wandsworth Common lol :) )

And does Castelnau really exist, or is it just Barnes?

I only a few years ago became aware of the exsitence of Somerstown around Kings X.

Until Hollis' walk earlier this year, I had no conception that there was such a place as Falconwood.

And Smoke magazine introduced me to Hacton, in its occasional series 'Parts of London that aren't as posh as they like to think they are'. It's in Havering, somewhere near Upminster.

A few i`d never heard of until recently:

Tokynton
Ben Hilton
loxford
shacklewell
fortis Green

Never heard of any of these places. Are they really London, or outer suburbs?

Fortis Green is near me. Oh no - I'm thinking of Fortune Green. It's apparently where I live according to estate agents. I call it Kilburn personally :D

It's near Muswell Hill. Shacklewell is between Islington and Stoke Newington.

Those other places are made up I reckon ;)
