Places in London that you've never heard of before

Sipson is near me, I believe.

Nearish, at least.

There was a programme a few years back called Paddington Green. When I asked my husband about it, he said there was no such place.. until we were driving into London one day, and got caught in traffic just on... Paddington Green!

Naturally, every time we drive past it now, it comes into the conversation!

Amen Corner isn't really an area, just a small street near Tooting . It is where the band with Andy Fairweather-Low got their name from though.

Are you sure Maggot? They were called Amen Corner before moving to London from Wales and I'd always assumed they were named after somewhere in Newport or Cardiff. I can't find an Amen Corner in Wales though, so either it's been knocked down or never existed.

Brimsdown is a great name isn't it? Fire and Brimsdown comes to mind. I used to be a student at the University of Ponders End (Middlesex Poly) and was amused by the names in the area; Freezywater was another good one.

Eel Brook Common ....?

(or have I got it wrong again) - there is an Eel Pie Island in West London.

Who was the Parson that got a green named after him ?

Nonsuch Park :)

Henry VIII built a fantasy palace there, but someone else pulled it down.

I was on the North Circular recently amd saw a sign for Brimsdown. Brimsdown!? In all my years of living in and around London I have never heard of this place before. How can I have been here so long and still find places which haven't registered on my radar before?

Enfield Town the peoples club play at Brimsdown.

This mkes me feel great. Been here 6 years and know all the places you guys are talking about! I think it's my sad interest in abandoned stations and lines that helps.

Ah, but how good are you at the postcode game?

As in NW1, Camden, NW2, Cricklewood, NW3, Hampstead, NW4, Hendon, etc

Hours of useless nerdiness :D

Maybe say that one a little more quietly huh? :D

I work near there and haven't seen that.. although there is an Ave Maria Lane.

As Ant79 says - vindication :D - actually there's a beautiful frieze on a building at the top of the street, a redbrick place - all of these artisans and peasants looking down at you, really marvellous. There's a good few little gems round there - Postman's Park is another one.

But NW1 also covers part of Marylebone, and NW2 also covers Willesden. :p

Indeed. But postcodes are alphabetical. Except for central London. Honest.

And PLEASE don't draw attention to my complete nerdiness  :o

Brimsdown...a made up name surely? I've never heard of it either.

Nah, it's real. Just up the road to Waltham Cross, although personally I'd call it Hertfordshire, or Middlesex rather than London.........

I read somewhere that the areas nearest the city were given the 1 postcode. ie: Islington N1; Mayfair W1 etc. and the rest were alphabetical. But, if that's the case, why is Baysawater W2 and Acton W3.

Do the post office actually call W2 Bayswater though? It is indeed done alphabetically. W2 will be called something else by the Royal Mail.

Like what?

If Acton is W3, then W2 would have to start with Ab or Ac, too.

A few i`d never heard of until recently:

Tokynton
Ben Hilton
loxford
shacklewell
fortis Green

Fortis Green is between East Finchley and Muswell Hill; there's an episode of Porridge where Ronnie Barker comes out the police station at Fortis Green. I've never heard of the rest of them.

W1 and W2 and WC/EC don't work. Everything else does though. Honest.

I used to live in Shacklewell. Quite good living somewhere no one's ever heard of. I now live in Brondesbury. Which most people haven't heard of either.
