Remember when the FA Cup could lay claim to being the greatest club competition in the world? And people gave a shit about the League Cup?

The Premiership/FA sure saw that one off. Much more money in Europe

The glory of finishing fourth over actually winning a trophy

Idiocy

i wish it was the 80's again :(

Rangers and Celtic have the potential to be big premiership clubs, though. Celtic, in particular, have enormous support throughout the world.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean that they'll get there. They would start off at a clear disadvantage compared to the top 6-ish sides. They quite probably wouldn't make European competition for a while. That could easily start off a cycle that ends up with them being relegated.

Sure they do because everyone Irish or Catholic supports them.

They would probably take a bit of support away from some premiership clubs with second gen irish switching allegiance but fuck them they should never be allowed into the Premiership.

it is even. All clubs gert the same ammount from sky.

That's not true. There's a basic payment for being part of the PL, then a payment based on how many matches a team is shown in (and Sky do try to do a good mix of each club although they're obviously more partial to the top 4) and then a merit payment based on league position.

Although it sounds like anathema to the ears of most football supporters, the merit payment is a big problem and needs to go. If Man Utd are already the biggest club financially, and then they manage to win the league which is what you'd expect, then how exactly is giving them the most money going to make things anything other than fucking predictable?

BTW, did a bit more reading on the topic, a cut off in promotion from the Championship isn't being proposed, although it was last time round, this time it's a two up two down. Which is crazy because the championship is essentially a graveyard financially for lots of teams that end up in it, with only two chances to go back up, there'd be many more like Leeds, Charlton, Forest, Southampton etc etc.

That's what I'm saying though. The idea is to make money but I really don't buy it. I wouldn't be subscribing to Sky or ESPN any more knowing that Rangers or Celtic would be playing. I suspect I'm in the majority.

That's a good point, Sky would probably charge you a bit more, and in the end, most fans will be ok because two leagues of 18 teams play a lot more games than one league of 20. They'd do really well selling it worldwide though, the market for the Premiership abroad is ridiculous, especially considering that at least by watching their international teams, most foreign fans should have an idea what good football is supposed to look like as opposed to English ping pong style football.

So the old division 3 would now be the championship ... for fuck's sake! As so many people have said, bring back divisions 1, 2, 3 & 4. Not only have the new names fucked up the present they also totally screw up the history books. Flick through the Sky football yearbook and you'll learn for example that Portsmouth were Division 1 champions in 1949, 1950 and 2003. Which they were of course but it didn't mean quite the same thing last time round.

I think they should bring back Divisions 1, 2, and 3rd Division North & South !

Teams at this level (and in the Conference) should not be travelling the length and breadth of the country. Carlisle, for example, shouldn't have to travel to Gillingham to play football - if it was regionalised you'd get more local derbies. Less travelling for the clubs - more visiting fans. It's win-win !

nonsense

Notts County would be playing Exeter, Chesterfield would be traveling to Carlisle rather than playing each other. So all sorts of midlands derbies would be lost by drawing an arbitrary line across the country. There is nothing to suggest that the overall result would be beneficial.

Who says it needs to be arbitrary? Looking at the NFL, there are plenty of teams who are far away from their actual geographical location (the NFC East has Dallas, for instance, who have a huge rivalry with all other three teams in the division). I think it would be perfectly possible to make leagues a bit more regional and keep rivalries at the same time.

it could mean some fairly large local rivals being at the same tier of competition, but unable to meet in the league

It's also a charter for lowering standards in the division. Would Exeter rather play Leeds or Aldershot? Come on, we all know the answer to that. Oldham or Barnet?

Or the other way around. Tell Tranmere they can't play Southampton any more but they can have a trip to Grimsby instead. Regionalisation was abolished 50 years ago for a reason.
