Surfer Rosa out in front by a mile, Bossanova edging out Doolittle for second place, Come On Pilgrim a little behind those two, and Trompe le Monde gamely limping along some ways back from the pack.

Rosa is better [than Doolittle] as an album but dosen't have the best stand alone tracks.
Yes, as someone else pointed out, you've managed to get this completely the wrong way round. Since you've also, on another thread, declared Safety Dance one of the best songs of all time, I'm starting to think that you might be a bit of an idiot - no offence - and you're going to have to go some way with me now to prove that you're not.

But I digress.

Bossanova has some great mildly twisted surf on it that nobody else could do - Ana for one. Is probably my favourite because it's the one that was out when I stopped not liking them out of twattiness.

I like Cactus. I think it's the sexiest song in the world ever. And that's a fact.

Bowie's version is awesome too

If Doolittle had nothing on it except for Joey Santiago's guitar squeal at the beginning of 'there goes my gun' it would still be the best album ever made. Apart from Surfer Rosa anyway...

Anyway, I did this poll a while back

Yeah, I remembered and even looked it up.

I was rather surprised it was actually way back in 2005!

Urban has done strange things to my perception of time - I could have sworn it was only last year you polled this.

:hmm:

Same here. The only album by them that I think is slightly weaker than the rest is 'Trompe Le Monde' - I really couldn't pick between the others!

surfer rosa is great - however throw in come on Pilgrim and it's even better.

Bossanova is pretty good too - a different feel from the previous two. A bit more mellow.

The Surfer Rosa/Come on Pilgrim double album release of course.

this is the right answer.

although, as the poll points out, a bit of a cheat.

it is isn't it? it was always my favourite off the album

Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa both show the Pixies at their strangest and most endearing. there's camp and melodrama and fierceness and surprise. Doolittle was enjoyable but the arteries were hardening and the music started to get a bit formulaic. (And set the template that Nirvana adopted, in a more prosaic rawk manner.) After Doolittle I wasn't interested; they stopped surprising and it was just variations on a theme.

you surfer rosa fans can fuck right off

debaser, wave of mutilation, here comes your man, monkeys gone to heaven...

doolittle wins.

*end of discussion*

I still think the BBC album's the best...not really a comp it's just the versions rock on it. But anyway, Surfer Rosa wins...Doolittle's just a little too polished for me.

They should've stuck with Albini for Doolittle if possible. I don't like Gil Norton's work at all. I don't even like what he did with The Triffids.

*goes to check* 'cactus' is track 2 on 'Heathen' and he also covers Neil Young's 'i've been waiting for you' on this album (always makes me think of the Pixies version) :)

I couldn't let this go without commenting. It's the worst cover I have ever heard and completely decimates all that is great and good about that song. I think that is primarily Frank Black's creepy squealy whine but anyway, it's a horror and Bowie should be spanked.

thanks all :)
