Pirate DVDs. Why bother

But you would download illegally, is that right? If so, what's the difference?

I'm not giving money to people who create pirate dvds, and therefore I'm not supporting that trade.

The people uploading the files or storing them in shared folders do not get any money out of it.

The DVD industry is thriving.

Its up to the relevant authorities to clamp down on online piracy, and so far they're doing a very good job of it.

I'm skint.

The asian guys who come in my local tend to have excellent copies. The ones I had of Sin City and Star Wars 3 were excellent. They also have a good selection of porn, allegedly ;)

I've got no problem with it, to be honest.

He's right - and they come in nice cardboard wallets. But don't expect the credits on the back to relate to the film! As these dvd's are produced in China, often they will copy and paste and old text from a review magazine to produce the cover. My Harry Potter dvd has a reveiw of a Jackson Pollock exhibition on the back. My Million Kollar Baby ;) dvd has the most fantastic Engrish review I ever read. TBH it makes it more entertaining for me.

Yeah the covers are rather dodgy! I keep them all in carry-case thingys...

My favourite one was one where they'd selected a choice review on the film, but hadn't bothered checking the review first.

It screamed, in massive letters along the top, "THE ACTING IS AWFUL AND THE SCRIPT IS CRINGEWORTHY!"

Yeah, the ones we get in Burma mostly come from China, and perfect quality they are too. I don't think I've ever seen an original. If it doesn't work, what have I lost? Probably around $0.30.

30 cents? That's even cheaper than China...

I bought one recently which the pirates actually went to the trouble of finding a review of the movie and pasting that on the back, unfortunately the review was particularly scathing and said not to bother.

95% of the chinese ones i have bought are good but i have had a few that are only in russian and due to the crackdowns the guys in shenzen are less inclined to let you check the quality of each one before you buy it.

Are you in China too? I still haven't found a Batman Begins in English...

They let me check the quality here though...

Most of the bollywood films i have watched in my life have been pirates-and decent quality ones...alot of bollywood film rental shops rent out pirates.

I guess they just don't have the same copyright laws in Asia, right?

All the Chinese music Cds and films here are pirates too, and the police don't care about those - they only crack down (occasionally) on the western films!

So I do wonder how the singers make their dosh...

Cam's now are for big cinema releases, and it seems like there are more of them because the perfect dvd versions are becoming ever more rare.

I don't think I've ever come across a cam for film that had already been released on DVD, seems very pointless.

As far as I'm aware there's still not been a perfect (or even good) quality version of any of the big summer blockbusters.

I have very good versions of Mr and Mrs Smith and Fantastic Four. That said, it took a few weeks. A friend bought Mr&Mrs Smith just after its cinema release, and it was a cam version.

Also got a reasonable, but not great, quality War of the Worlds

My mate Dan was chuffed to fuck when I brought him home a copy of Independence Day from China which had the title as 'Independance Dan'. :D

I'd rather my hard earned cash went to helping a few poor migrants pay off the snakeheads than up the noses of the hollywood establishment quite frankly. If you buy the newest movies they're generally going to be cam jobs but there are bargains to be had.
