Pigs in Blankets

Has everyone always called them pigs in blankets or is this an Americanism that has become widely accepted during my lifetime?

"Sausages wrapped in bacon" was good enough for us

Well I am old and we used the term pigs in blankets to refer to sausages wrapped in bacon when I was little, so it isn't a new thing. What Americans call pigs in blankets is actually different, usually sausages wrapped in pastry - more like a mini sausage roll.

That does make more sense as pastry is more like a blanket than bacon.

We are simple folk from Lincolnshire :D

They're seasonal. It's the only time off year that you can get all of the ingredients

Yeah that shortage of bacon or sausages at other times of the year REALLY fucks me off. It's worse than only being able to get hot cross buns at easter *hides hot cross buns that were purchased 2 days ago in the back of the cupboard* :D

I guess it depends on personal taste as what you consider a more comforting, blanket-like wrapping. For some it is bacon, for others it is pastry.

Has anyone done a sausage wrapped in bacon wrapped in pastry? Sign me up!

I have surveyed a wide number of people (ok, a few, but from both sides of the Atlantic!) and it seems that pigs in blankets largely means sausages in pastry to those in the US, and sausages in bacon to those in the UK, and the rest of the world is just confused about both US and UK food choices... :D

When I was a child, pigs in blankets were sausages wrapped in sliced white bread, with the crusts off, spread with ketchup or mustard, then baked till crisp on the edges.

Those are hot dog sausages/frankfurters, in bread, with cheese. I would definitely eat that! But that is not in the slightest way what we are talking about :D

Pigs in blankets = sausages wrapped in [fluffy American-style] pancakes, and (nominally) optionally covered in maple syrup.

No bacon, no pastry, no bread. Pancakes.

Looks like pastry to me:
