i know there used to be. is there one somewhere?
No. It used to be by The Albert. Disappeared ages ago.
There's Arments near East Street and others whose names I can't remember at the moment. One near Tower Bridge that's quite famous I think.
The opticians next to the Albert, I thought apparently it got burned down during the riots because it was a bit... you know.
I think there's still one in Elephant and Castle.
Picture of it on Lambeth's archives
I went there many years ago, so I can't remember which riots it burned down in, unless they refurbed and re-opened
That's not the Albert is it? It looks more like Gyoza or something.
No, it's 426 Coldharbour Lane
I do beg your pardon
Coincidentally enough, I've got a 'Then and Now' ready to go for the pie and mash shop. I'll post it next week.
I knew you would
If you just want pie and mash rather than a pie and mash shop, go to the Phoenix when Michael does a homemade steak pie (Thursdays?).
There used to be a museum at 423 Coldharbour Lane.....
Angel still has a pie and mash shop, woulda thunk youd get one here
The pies are rank though.
The classical pie pastry is just shaped wet flour with indeterminate mince as the filling.
*pours liquor on thread*
knees up mother brahn etc
there was a pie and mash shop on brixton road, at the top end near oval. probably been closed for at least 10 years tho! until a few years ago you could still see the writing above the empty shop. i think it's that polish deli now 'malinka' - or one of the nearby shops.
M Manze. Between Bermondsey Square and Bricklayers Arms on Tower Bridge Road.
I remember that but there's no way it's been closed 10 years. Maybe in the last 5 years though.
I used to get the bus to work and it was there, but I changed and started getting tube about 5 years ago and I think it may have disappeared shortly before that
There's a pie shop in Peckham. Harrington's in Stockwell looked the part, but the mash always had lumps in it.
Not really keen on pie and mash tbh. The last pie I ate in Manze's had tubular bits in it. The interiors of the pie shops are good though, quite dignified.
There used to be one in Tooting as well
That's another branch of M Manze's, it's on the Peckham Park Road IIRC.
Brixton pies and mash was the best good eels as well.
why do lambeth insist on putting copyright notices on images that blatantly arent under copyright. sigh.
Has this happened yet?
Pics are done, haven't had time to post up the page yet. Soon come bro'.
Looking forward to it.
There's one in Sutton on the High Street opposite Asda, and another on Tower Bridge Road in Bermondsey FWIW.
A little late (cough) but the article is now up:
I'm trying to work out when it closed. I can remember having a cuppa in there around 1995.
The other month, I was up the hill having a chat about the pie and mash shop. There was an entrance or window open onto Electric Lane. I remember you could see the jellied eels at that window.
