Picture This -- Channel 4 photo comp

I spotted that via another forum too - same thoughts, but I applied anyway. My reply was along the lines of:

What are your best and worst personality traits?
Fetch me a bottle of liquor and I'll show you.

:D

So, did you or, didn't you?

BTW (and inevitably) Martin P**r is one of the judges.

And the winner will get a book published.

"worst personality traits" - being a serial killer.

Cunt will vote for the photographer most like himself just to show how influential he's been.

About time he stood down and fucked off I say.

:D

Seriously though, it would be great if there were a UK equivalent (or several) of the

http://www.jenbekman.com/

thing -- i.e. anyone can upload photos, an artist statement, and get a chance to be exhibited in a gallery (where the selection panel was credible) on merit.

Rather than a reality TV performing-seal-show for telegenic people who happen to be in a position to take a month off work.

I won't be entering the BJP contest either. I don't really have a use for a big camera with or without movements. I cannot afford large format film or plates. Nor am I willing to spend the few dollars/Pounds/Euros to enter. The winner will be someone who already uses such a camera. 'Pack shots' are not my genre and I can do architecture with my massive-zoom compact and use skew and perspective control in Photoshop Elements.

Crystal clear resolution is no big deal to me. I care about composition and mood. I am beginning to leave some of my noisier pictures uncorrected even though I have Noise Ninja. I come from a background of using high speed film which has a lot of grain, and of enjoying Impressionist and Post Impressionist painting which is also not about detail.

Such competitions are probably a good thing though to encourage young photographers to look at what is going on and to to compete with it. Me I am an an amateur these days and I like it that way.

Excellent post, I agree with all of it.

Yeah, I know.

It's open worldwide in theory -- a few British photographers have been chosen.

I entered it once at the last minute. But thinking about it later, if you're accepted, you have to post your work to the US (mounted as well I think = a lot of money) and you're expected to go to the opening night in New York, so you would have to have a heap of dosh for the privilege.

Edit: that's why I was thinking that a British version would be a nice idea.

It's not just about the equipment. It's about the exhibition and publicity also. The exhibition and publicity may even generate enough work to enable the winner to actually afford to use the 5x4 camera.

As for the amateur thing; I reckon more LF cameras are used by enthusiastic amateurs than professionals. Just because you get paid for taking photographs doesn't make you a better photographer.

I think it's an excellent prize package that will appeal to photographers with high aspirations.

Voting now closed on the PictureThis Channel 4 comp. Remarkably low ratings. I averaged a 1.7 out of 5. Forgot to try rating GarfieldLeTwat before the deadline. Can't be arsed to look through all of them because there is loads of utter dross in there, but I think a convenient M.Parr wannabe has made the cut.

There are also some absolute gems in there that got completely ignored.

This one got maximum rating of 5:

This one got 1.67:

This one also got 1.67:

Don't think the voting system worked. Or, were they looking for the type of people who big themselves up by knocking others down. A few in there obviously got rated 5 by posting very late and bigging themselves up very late.

I *think* I read somewhere on that there Flickr thing that 400 hopefuls have already been contacted and will be making they're way to London for the auditions.

So if you haven't heard by now, you're probably unlucky. Anyone get selected?

Is that Buncefield? That's not just a quality photo but a one-off too.

400 Blimey! There were only a total of 480 entries and most were utter shyte. They're definitely not looking for good photographers.

That has got a really good Z thing going on but I'm not sure about the sun's glare, and its a bit busy at the bottom. Other than that I really like it - its my kind of thing.

I think it's totally shyte :D

You got some waterproof housing for your Nikon? Seems to be a must have accessory for festivals this year. I'm sure you'll make the most of the mud bath anyway. Drugs and wellies is all you need :)

And a tent and good company ;)

We're going tomorrow as all the roads and that are blocked, the site is flooded etc. So tonight is off :(

The camera is in a lowpro bag, inside an army bag, inside an allweather rucksack, wrapped in a goretex outter shell. It'll be grand, man. Not sure if the music is my bag but fuck it :D

I'm taking cameras to a Southern World music type festival here at the weekend. Can only go Sunday (job to do tomorrow). Very different problem thousands trying to escape 40 degree heat. Might sound idyllic, but it can be fucking hell.

It's held in a small town where all the residents allow people to pitch tents in their gardens for the weekend. And, it's all free :) Some decent music Sunday evening also. Oh, and a near by river for cooling off. And, no trance

Fuck. I'm bored stupid this afternoon. Must go out now before I stagnate.

Stanley -- maybe I got it wrong.

I *thought* I remembered seeing that somewhere on Flickr but can't find it now.

It all seemed to be a bit last minute what with the website not working for some people and only being open for a limited amount.

I got an email about the competition from the production company ages ago saying they liked my photos.

I don't know if that meant they had their eye on me as a hopeful or had just identified me as someone who pops up in a lot of forums talking shite, and so would give the competition some publicity!

Either way, I don't have 3 weeks spare unfortunately and am not exactly reality TV material so didn't even bother to look at the site.

Interesting to see what the performing seal circus will be like...

Nonetheless, that is still surprisingly few entries for a high profile photography competition. No doubt the 'reality TV' bit put many off. I would still expect somewhere around 2500-3000 entries.

On the rare occasions I've entered awards and been shortlisted I've often wondered if only Six people entered.

I'd have a go at this years BJP comp if I had a set of photographs I thought worthy of entering. It's a very nice prize package and £20 isn't a lot (even though I feel any sponsored competition/award should be free to enter). However, on the whole I'm really not into wasting money and time on competitions and awards. It's all a bit arbitrary and down to the whims of judges who often have very peculiar tastes.

I'm not sure if there is another thread on this, but I thought it would be a good time to resurrect this one.

The series got slated by a few people before it came out. Have low expectations been justified or have people been pleasantly surprised?

Yes, there's a more recent thread a few down "Reality TV, etc, etc." that I started -- I forgot that this one that alef started existed!

Must be going senile...
