Should di/triptychs be treated as a single image or 2/3 images?

PTF...

Definitely single, provided people know to review them as such.

It's all photography in the end. Personally I'd like to see more of that in these competitions as it'd encourage people to experiment more. If it's in general not to everyone's taste, it won't win. If the individual composition is shit, e.g. they don't complement each other, it won't win. Simple.

I guess there could be a point where you have to say, no, that's more artwork than photography, but it's not done simply by combining images.

And whatever happens, either allow them as one or ban them. Trying to include them as individuals in the entry and/or voting is farcical.

If triptych are allowed we'd all be fools not to make all our future entries such. Makes it easier to convey a lot more meaning than just a single image and so more likely to win maybe?

I haven't yet entered a comp but I would say they should be treated as single images and agree with mauvais in that you either allow as a single image or not at all.

But I could include three imagtes as a trip' with tenious links between each and do that three times...

If you tried to shoehorn a dozen tiny, unrelated shit photos into one composition then you wouldn't win. The people voting aren't idiots. A single powerful image beats an average set.

If - like the one in question here - it works fairly well, then why not let them try?

If you stop it, you'll have to start questioning other things. For instance, is this a valid entry?

Frankly I don't much enjoy this eternal bickering over what's acceptable and what's not. It's photography. If can you do it with a camera and a little bit of computer tinkering, how's it not valid? Hell, you could do it with a multiple exposure on a film camera if you were mental enough. Personally I think if you could fit a short stop motion film into an 800x600 image then you should be allowed to give it a go, but hey.

and what about those cameras with the 4 lenses?

on reflection, I think mauvais is right. what you're entering is a 'work of art' where the main tool is a camera. each work should be considered seperately.

I think that photo's (those photos are) great, Mauvais: They form a cohesive whole. In my opinion if people choose to enter multiple images in one go, then they should be scored on the basis of the multiples put together. If they're all rubbish apart from say 1, then I wouldn't vote for them.

Incidentally, if that's your idea of The Good Things In Life then maybe you've been missing out...

Mauvais summed it up pretty well IMO.
Does it really matter that this is 3 individual images portrayed as a whole?

So here's the $64,000 question... If I print the image(s) then take a photograph of the print and re-submit it, is it then 1 or 3 images? :D

I don't touch the stuff, it's Morpheus the mouse, he's an animal, I think he needs to talk to Frank :D

TBH I only voted no because I thought people may join three images together with tenious links between the two but as pointed out - they won't get any votes.

People are savvy enough to realise when someone is pulling a fast one - and if the three images don't work together as a cohesive whole then they won't get votes.

Psst, who's going to invite Lilac Cow to view the works of Hockney? :D

I thought that was a hockney!
The one with the scrabble game is best I think - chops up time and space, very nice. It's like the human eye, twitch, twitch, snapshot, snapshot, see this detail, see that detail.

I saw that and the pic of his mother at the Hockney exhib earlier in the year. They are just great.

Should we add this to the rules, I already added: "It is encouraged that people enter new photos" following myself and others entering old pics more than once.

How about:

* Di/triptychs, photostitching and collages are acceptable providing they correspond to the chosen theme

?

fine with me. i've already entered a photo-stitched image for one of the previous monthly comps - Jan 2007 - Copies of the masters.

I may make a BB code template of the rules then - so others can simply C&P it :)

Piece of piss. I did one of HMS Warrior that sold like hotcakes, will try and dig it out but I think it is on my old HDD that tp has. :)

I did this: climbed to the top of a signal tower on HMS Nelson Naval Base, (you need AAA pass for this). Whacked on a 18mm lens, turned everything to manual and quickly fired off a series of shots (about 200) before the light changed too much and the result was pretty much the above. Then made a new blank canvas in photoshop - 2m by 2m and stuck them all together and resized it to about 3'x3'

Not my thing but they did look good as a poster - hence loads of kids buying it :)

Well hockney did it by getting the photos developed and then sticking them to a big piece of paper:) This is probably still the easiest/most satisfying way.
