Yeah I think you're right. I've boiled everything down into a PPT, from which I've extracted a few slides from the area that's most suitable for the audience a la Kuso , and am working this up into a 1500-worder based on Pickman's model 's thoughts on timing.

I've done half a dozen conference talks and I usually go for 100 words per min. i do history talks, so some of my slides are simply an image of someone i'm talking about. other times, I'm wanting to give a detailed description of an image like a political cartoon, or explain a table. I usually take about 50 words off the wordcount and ad lib if i need to describe a visual.
general advise,
read it out loud at least 4-5 times. the idea being that you learn the script and you then only have to look down at it to scan sentences. you will probably loose your place occasionally, but that's better than having to look at it constantly.
big enough font and line spacing to read it. few things are worse than seeing someone squinting to read their talk
mark slide change in a coloured pen in the margins
and if you think you might go over time, mark yourself a place where you can make an early cutoff.
