If you are wondering why pete was asked by the burns society in Scotland to read at the Rabbie Burns festival last year maybe its because they could see how this waster actually writes a bit like burns, in a similar vein.

Poets separated by the centuries - check this

Robert Burns

The Rights of Women (excerpt)
While Europe's eye is fix'd on mighty things,
The fate of Empires and the fall of Kings;
While quacks of State must each produce his plan,
And even children lisp the Rights of Man;
Amid this mighty fuss just let me mention,
The Rights of Woman merit some attention.
First, in the Sexes' intermix'd connection,
One sacred Right of Woman is, protection.
The tender flower that lifts its head, elate,
Helpless, must fall before the blasts of Fate,
Sunk on the earth, defac'd its lovely form,
Unless your shelter ward th' impending storm.

Pete Doherty

Ask A Stupid Question (excerpt)

Someone on or above the earth, tell me why on
earth, does she beg for love at the feet of men
who snatch hers from her, selling it on to themselves
at a profit that can't possibly reflect its worth
This always ungentle robbery, is not a plot of lust,
because she is very conscious of her select for lovers,
particularly in relation to her gains, to her own
sexual harvest

if i have a party at my gaf, with lots of da doherty torture, would anyone come?

*i have a very nice gaf

I don't find his music particularly offensive, so I wouldn't not go to a party purely on that basis.

It'd depend what else was gwan on, innit... ;)

how many songs?

i think anyone who wouldnt fall head over heels in love with Up the Bracket is bonkers!

See there you go again forcing your viewpoints on people,if you like it fine, i personally think he and his music is a waste of space.

LOTS ;)

Well you know Albion is an ancient name for England, so i think he wanted to depict many sides of it, which he captured in those lyrics quite eloquently.

as for that wordplay -

black and blue, he refers to the rough side of England/ violence as in, beaten black and blue...

are you from round here, how do you do? - thats the polite side of England, the exact opposite.

Its very clever imo

I wasnt forcing my opinion, but expressing it - there is a difference.

Its not my fault I express myself passionately!

I remember getting a press copy and wondering who the fuck would give a fuck about the jingle jangle ramble bollocks. I only gave it a shot because of Mick Jones.

PS. I very much doubt I am as bonkers as you are.

I only got into them cos of Mick Jones as well Atomic. When I read an interview where Mick said that the songwriting dynamic between Pete and Carl was just like him and Joe, i was like - I have to get this. And Mick was right.:D

Fair enough, but the rhyme itself is a little on the clunky side, imo.

Never mind, though, it makes you happy, which is the point of listening to music in the first place.

Why would what I, or anyone else, thinks affect your enjoyment? It doesn't, of course...

:)

Sexual harvest eh?

Working on a sex farm
Hosing down your barn door
Bothering your livestock
They know what I need

Working up a hot sweat
Crouching in your pea patch
Plowing through your beanfield
Planting my seed

sexual harvest - i think he means when a woman reaches her prime, like a flower blossoming :)
Sex farm woman, I'll be your hired hand
Sex farm woman, I'll let my offer stand
Sex farm woman, don't you hear my tractor rumbling by?

:(

I have only heard one song by him - that Albion one, which I thought was quite good. Quite reminiscent of the Kinks really.

You missed out my favourite lines:

Working on a sex farm
Trying to raise some hard love
Getting out my pitch fork
Poking your hay

Scratching in your henhouse
Sniffing at your feedbag
Slipping out your back door
Leaving my spray

I think the Libertines were a 'great' band.. in that they are one of the few bands that made kids want to start bands.... like the pistols, like the stone roses etc...

Doherty has some talent but I think hes doing his best to extinquish it unfortunately...
