Pete Docherty vs Amy Winehouse

They tried to make me go to rehab.....

Right, it's a bit of a long walk for him, though, eh?

I mean, Amy's about as likely to try and batter her way in at 3am, isn't she?

I'm still equally disinterested in these two, and nothing anyone says is going to change that.

what if you ran a corner shop and they both came in - one distracted you whilst the other stuck lots of chocolate bars up their top? would *that* make you care?

Look, neither of those two are going to outrun me. Doherty's a tall gimp with excess baggage and Winehouse has got Bambi legs. They're both going down.

Besides, how many choccy bars do you think Winehouse could hide in her extra small top then? Barely fit a finger of fudge in there, let alone a Lion bar.

Then I'd disklike them both equally and still wouldn't be able to vote...

good points, tarannau.

i think pete docarhty would try and swing for you with his guitar as you went for him, but lose balance and topple over, crumpling his hat as he fell.

I think Amy and Pete are without a doubt the most talented musicians England has produced in years.

Pete has produced much more music than Amy, but it is Amy who is streets ahead in the talent stakes. If you listen to songs such as 'Beat to the point of death' and 'Mr Magic' they are like classic vintage Prince with brilliant melodies and horrns.

as a songwriter Amy is devastatingly brilliant and the world knows this, shes not just a vocalist but an incredible songwriter and lyricrist. its impossible to deny and I dont think she can cope with her talent. If she ever gets clean which I pray she will - have the potential and longevity of Prince.

both Pete and Amy will stand the test of time (if they live - Pete probably will, as he isnt tortured like she is), and both are already legends in their lifetime. They'll both be remembered when they die, an immortalised like Ian Curtis and Kurt Cobain. We know Amy will be anyway but I predict Pete will too, his star will jump after he dies and peeps won over by his music - especially the incredible acoustic stuff that none of you have heard of.

I actually fear that Doherty may use his diminishing, but rabid, cult-like band of fans to help.

Honestly, you'd have to fight your way through the tragic sadsacks to get to the big man. After seeing some Dohertyites cooing over one of Pete's prison diaries as if it was the bible - a book which consisted of some juvenile doodles, random scribbles and sub 6th form stoner poetry - I think he could bring some support.

To put Doherty in then same post let alone sentence as Ian Curtis is frankly ludicrous.

Bet you it won't. Curtis was still vaguely popular and valued when he died.

Doherty's distinctly on a downward career spiral. No drugs stories, little interest

Pete is hugely popular among teenagers, youd be surprised, inspiring stage invasions and fanatical love from hoardes of adoring fans. He gets mobbed. I have been to his gigs and seen it every time.

His career is on a downward spiral aye, but the musical press is still excited by him, the real press never were. Hes done five excellent albums already though, although Down in Albion was a bit mash up.

Yes, he was so popular that he couldn't even pack out Mass despite several weeks notice.

Fanatical fans he may still have, but he's of minor consequence to others.

nah he's just as good. And its what will happen when he dies whether you like him or not.

I accept you're a fan of Doherty, which albeit misguided imho, is fine etc etc. However there is, or should be, a dividing line between fandom and out and out idiocy. Doherty is nothing compared to Ian Curtis. His persona, legacy and frankly music are not in the same league let alone same breath. Apart from his self-delusional fans Doherty will be remembered for being a sad sack junkie who got more chances than most.

who cares what you think? I certainly dont :)

thats true. Hes very popular though, and with a culty following, hes not a mass commerical artist like Amy is. But theres no doubt that his hoardes of adoring fans are scarily dedicated. If you think I am a fan, im nothing like this lot. He seems to inspire 'fanatical' kind of love from his fans, thats what makes him special too, because he is clearly touching something within them.

I dont think that this thread was well thought out by isitme to be honest though. Because Amy and Pete arent really comparable.

What makes Doherty non commercial then - he plays guitar based stuff, the current musical direction of the day.

Fanatical cult like fans are not a mark of quality anyhow. If that was true Scientology would really have a point and Star Trek would be the best programme made ever.

.

Go and find out about him, but i'd say for one, you wouldnt hear his songs on the radio. He'll never have mass appeal, I do think The Libertines eventually would have, as their music was that good (and they are rumoured to be reforming, which would be the best thing to happen to music in years:), as they were the best thing to happen till Amy came along).

I love pete docherty me

I know he is hyped up and everything but he writes brilliant songs imo
I have enjoyed the odd libertines/baby shambles song. I have yet to hear an amy winehouse song i've liked(not saying shes shit juust dont like what she does). So its pete.
These, so Pee Docherty.
well at least she's not pete dougherty.
It's Docherty.
you'd care if pete dochertee stole your bike.
It's Docherty.

i've heard "albion" on the radio loads of times. it's okay, but like the other pete doherty related stuff i've heard, it's just... nowt special. better than a lot of the skinny jean bands the libertines apparentley inspired, but nothing to write home about.

He was on Jonathon Ross, too. If that's not Friday night mainstream coverage, I don't know what is.

Still, we'll never understand, because we don't have the right kind of poetry in our souls, or something.

To which, I say "fucking good".
