whether it is or not it does show a certain intolerance of certain people's positions & opinions here, the amount of snobbery displayed on these types of threads is amazing

thing is, i can't stand radiohead's music but in terms of influence - be it good or bad - they're miles ahead of the Libertines.
I'd still rather see the Libertines live over Radiohead who I found to be one of the most disappointing live bands I've ever seen.

One of the best bands I have ever seen is Muse, amazing live - crap in the studio.

If you post opinion as facts, making definitive statements, you can expect them to be challenged, surely.

That's not snobbery, it's life.

Is it weird that I quite fancy Cheesypoof despite a) not having a clue what she looks like, b) not having spoken to her and c) not really agreeing with anything she says?

Can anyone else relate to this with other members?

Bwahahaha! My sides!

They're just an above average indie band with an above average ability to generate tabloid headlines thanks to the antics of the admittedly slightly charismatic Pete Doherty.

Try this small test. Stop people in the street - any age - and ask them to sing a Beatles song and then ask them to sing a Libertines tune. I guarantee blank faces galore at the second request. That's how 'important' they are.

editor - you speak bollox - please dont chuck it in the bin though.

Agree with Muse being great live. I've seen them a few times.

I was really looking forward to seeing Radiohead as I do like their albums but we left after about four or five songs as it was just so boring. We ended up seeing Fear Factory instead. :D

Rather than snobbery, I'd suggest other people are voicing their opinions just like CP does on a very regular basis re Wassis Name.

ah, don't rise to it. He just goes round looking for stuff to complain and bitch about

Where was that LD? I've seen them a few times and have always been blown away, Glastonbury 97 was something I'll take with me to the day I die.

Iemanja, I love you.

There you go again with this snobbery. I happen to think he's probably the most influential whinger of the past 25 years.

Must've caught them on a bad night/been standing in a dodgy place for view/sound ... I've seen 'em loads and they've always been brilliant.

Sziget Festival in Buadpest last August. Just about everyone else I know who had seen them before said they were amazing and I was really hyped up for them but I guess they had an off night or something. The whole crowd looking bored as well.

Nirvana and The Libertines probably.

i am a Nirvana fanatic more than a Libertines one, and the libertines only did two albums, and it takes more to convince most people. I think that given more time, they would have the same kind of legacy as Nirvana, yes, because they were that good.

Unfortunately people (and a frightening amount on a supposedly liberal board like this) have astonishingly conservative views on the libertines story anyway, because of petes antics, and they just believe all they read in the paper, ignoring the only thing that matters: the music.

If 'important' means squillion unit shifting pompous ubiquitous pricks then the answer is U2.

I think that's unfair Cheesypoof. There are plently of other artists which posters like who have been in the tabloids for bad behaviour.

I genuinley think that the libertines are an ok band but not a great one. I base that on only the music.

A small mercy

What has the politics or zeitgeist of Urb got to do with folk not liking the Libertines. Shite is shite.

Back in the garage with my bullshit detektor...

no, cheesy, i thought the libertines were very average a long time before all the stories started coming out.

don't you think it's a rather childish argument to suggest that people don't rate them for reasons other than just not rating them.

I don't like or dislike acts because of their antics, and there are plenty of artists with way more extreme stories to tell than Doherty. So my judgement is based on the terribly average nature of their music, nothing else. Do try not to be so fucking arrogant, eh?

Must have done as they're usally "HOLY SHIT" live. You know the one where you just stand motionless with your jaw on the floor. A bit like this:

Such bulshit.

The Sex Pistols only did one proper LP, full of songs which genuinely did define an era and which are still culturaly significant now.

The Libertines produced two LPs which failed to "convince" people simply because they were mediocre.
