Pet getting old - preparing yourself?

Dude I remember billy from back in the day, hes a lovely mutt, i hope hes got a while left in him yet.

Im in a similar situation with my old dog, hes going on 13 now and has quite a few health issues. It breaks my heart thinking about it but i know hes had a very good life with me and hes still very happy (especially at dinner time)

I know as much as I try to prepare myself for the day it wont help me, il still be knocked for 6. But I guess thats part of owning a pet, you gotta take the rough with the smooth.

Anyway good luck billy!!

Heard about mitch today mate, sorry about that - he was a fine dog!

I reeckon you should get yourself a new one in a bit, not a replacement of course, but a new pal.

Yay for Billy still plodding on! Our Sparky was 19 last week. :D

Sorry about Mr Eddy, xes.

I was quite prepared for Badger to reach the end as he did a couple of weeks ago.

While I was sad to lose an old and trusted friend who had been through some bad times with me the fact he was so old at 14 and he went so quickly due to heart failure was great comfort.

I knew he was going to go sooner rather than later and with the exception of dying in his sleep I couldn't really have asked for a better death. He went painlessly and with dignity even if I didn't quite make it to the vets in time to be with him.

My abiding memory of him won't be his death but of what a daft, mischievous, sneaky, manipulative and downright greedy little sod he was when it suited him. He even ate a hearty breakfast the morning he died.

RIP Badger. Your afternoon munching your way through half a pub buffet will live forever in legend :D

Update: Bill had to be put down on saturday, after suffering kidney failure. He was 16 1/2 so a good old age for a Westie, and lived a good happy life.

My mum was with him when they did it, took him in his bed with his favourite toy (a big rubber doughnut he never chewed, but kept near him at all times).

Gonna get an evergreen plant now, and mix his ashes with the soil, so it will be a Bill plant!
