Best suggestion all thread, the reason they are in such a shit situation now is that is becoming very obvious that their value add to the whole process is fuck all.
I said, 'most artists whose music is readily available by Bittorrent are already multi-millionares', look at Pirate Bay's top 100 music files, presented as readily available;

This is a totally incoherent arguement. 99.9% of all music released will not get heard by the masses. Day in day out people work hard to fine tune their work in a hope that somebody may buy it. Because a tiny proportion of those artists make a lot of money, all artists should be deemed the same? Most music released these days will be torrented. The protecting of IP is a reasonable thing to ask.
I agree that record labels as we have known them are totally outmoded and should be phased out. But be aware that the balance of power can be shifted to modes of distribution (i.e. itunes) and that technology can be used to restrict as well as empower people's freedom of choice. When the marketing giants of yesterday (labels) have gone, they've been replaced with the marketing giants of today. While there's profit to be made people will attempt to do that and you cannot blame the artists themselves. If Paul McCartney made 800 million, then the record labels made at least double that and they're the ones driving the commercialism of it.
