And a non-turbo 944 will get mashed by a 200sx or Celica GT4, you won't get a turbo for under 4k

Porsche will sting you on insurance compared to the Japs as well.

We're talking about a 2 grand car remember. I didn't say a decent 944 would cost that, and I maintain that a £2k 944 is asking for trouble. Fair point about a decent car running forever with attention, and about decent independents being available to service it for less. I still think a £2k porsche is not a car to run on a budget.

I agree with avoiding cossies and GTTs for similar reasons - a cheap one will be shite.

A dolomite isn't the same thing at all of course, but for 2 grand you'll at least have a decent one. But that was a bit tongue in cheek from me at least. I just like em.

Do you really think a good 944 can be had for £2k? Genuine question!

Yes, but you have to be careful like any car purchase - there are so many about have have been bought by wide boys cos of the badge, on the other hand there a many good uns with fanatical owners. you need to see a few, but even on the bay of Fleas there seem to be a handful that if I were in ther market for one now, I would have a sniff around and they seem to be 2-2.5K.

Classic insurance! My old 88 3.2 carerra, fully comp, parked on the street in SE22, guaranteed agreed value - £250 a year:eek:

mashed by a 200sx ? Hmmmmmm I cant comment on that - I can stae with a little expericen though that a 944 handles utterly beautifully all thing considered with good rubber and decent springs

They're a cut above at that price in terms of class and build, I agree. I'd still be nervous personally! But definitely cool cars.

Are you miles limited on the classic insurance zoltan? Not that would be a problem for the OP by all accounts, but it would for me, just about.

you can negotaite.........around 2000/ 2002 ? I was running an Audi S2 2.2 turbo at the same time as a 3.2 Carerra both of which were on 6K annual mileage, so In had 12 K a year to play with. You were able to get up to about 10K a year for very little more cost - but with 2x 150mph beasts outside the house, I just wanted lowest insurance possible.

I alos had a 3.3 Cresta PC at one point at the same time- £85 quid a year insurance

having 8.7 litres of car hanging around did piss the neighbours off somewhat!

I I have an old V70 cross country now . Its not the same:(

Not utterly mashed maybe :) 1.5 - 1.9 sec quicker 0-60 depending on which figures you take and 10mph higher top speed. The mid-range on the SX is the more compelling difference, it gets from 40 to very illegal extremely quickly even in standard form, and is very easy to get an extra 100bhp out of.

A mate who's had both prefers the build of the Porker but the handling of the Nissan. Personally I think the 944 just has the edge on looks although the SX is better than a 924 and a blatant rip off of those two if ever there was one :D stick bigger wheels and a tasteful bodykit on it and there's nothing between them IMO.

I've just realised that no-ones mentioned the MR2.

Was thinking about that as I was cleaning my teeth (I have such an exciting life) but then I thought "hard to find a good turbo one for 2k and they're only on import, and they're 2 seaters, and they're hairdressers' cars".

Still, they are Toyotas, and MR, so fair shout.

Mk 1s can be had too, although I think cherished examples are probably heading up now.

I've always liked the mk2 myself, and I reckon a non-turb would be fast enough - 150/160 bhp or something, it went up a bit over time.

To me, anything with a roof is ok, hairdresser-wise.

looks like 1k upwards for average examples... not bad that.

Having a look on Pistonheads and the MR2 does seem to be a bit of a performance bargain. Like this one

I like that, not at all hairdressery.
This really isn't going to happen though :( I made the mistake of mentioning it in passing to my wife and I'm afraid I now have no penis. Hopefully the great advice on this thread will help someone else :)

:( Ditch the wife, sell up, buy a flat and a 911.

Sorted. :)

Agreed.

there is nothing in life like driving to Amsterdam in your 911 during summer , caning it for the night. Getting up before dawn the next day and pootling towards the German Border as dawn begins and FLOORING THE FUCKER on empty Bahns, wathcing the needle hit the 150..155...Mph mark...The engine howling as you you try to redline it in top

best hangover cure ever:D

Not quite sure of what to make of This 911. The mileage is certainly low, but £30,000 for a 1977 3.0?
