i'm sure there are more, but the album that immediately springs to mind when i think of an album that is utterly perfect (ie not just that there are no bad tracks, but that as a piece of work it is consistent and coherent and gels perfectly and is of a piece etc) it has to be Sparklehorse's Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot.

it's just perfect in every way.

I was allowing myself a tiny bit of license there.

ETA

Afraid not - just reminded myself of the track listing:

Black Dog (4.57)
Rock And Roll (3.41)
The Battle Of Evermore (5.52)
Stairway To Heaven (8.03)
Misty Mountain Hop (4.39)
Four Sticks (4.45)
Going To California (3.32)
When The Levee Breaks (7.08)

Everyone a winner..

Not wanting to sound like a fan boy but I have to listen to The Holy Bible and Everything must go by MSP in their entirety and never single tracks.

Mmm

There are better Garbarek albums IMNSHO.

"Dis" and "Places" for starters

Also Rarum

But for me it's the combination of Garbarek and the Hilliards that makes Officium perfect.

Jets to Brazil - Four Cornered Night
RFTC - Circa: Now!
John Coltrane - Blue Train
Fugazi - Red Medicine

RATM- Battle Of Los Agneles
Oasis- What's The Story
Billy Bragg- Lifes a blast with Spy Vs Spy
Bob Dylan - Highway 69 revisted
David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust
Floyd- Darkside of the Moon or the Wall

The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" anyone? And I know it's a hits collection but every one is a killer pop song so I'll also say "Singles Going Steady" by the Buzzcocks.

Above all I say "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)", where 9 men come from nowhere to do something no-one has ever matched or even aped since.

Pixies - Doolittle

I love the Pixies, and this is a great album, but I'm not sure I would define it as perfect. While it is superb for the first 10 tracks or so, there are a few near the end where it seems to tail off a bit, although gouge away is fantastic.

Nevermind, to me, is still the benchmark for 'perfect album'. I remember getting it at an age where I was much more impatient about music, and would fast forward through the poor tracks (pre CD era) and when I heard NEvermind I was just staggered by the fact that EVERY track was great.

As to Joy Division - yes, Unknown Pleasures is also great from start to finish. For some reason I haven't actually heard Substance.

Massive Attack's Protection is nearly a perfect album, but they then ruin it with the rubbish Doors cover at the end. Dunno what that was about.

So Much Rubbish On This List!

I am shocked!

Perfect Albums, that means beginning to the end
