The People's Republic Of Disco Presents

JUKE JOINT

Comrades...

as part of our plan to spread the message of Discocracy far and wide, we're proud to announce the launch of JUKE JOINT.

This weekly night will take place at the newly revamped and really rather lovely White Lion in Streatham, part of the Jamm / Red Star / Dirty South chain. The bar is here and is on the righthand side of Streatham High Street heading from Brixton.. It's roughly opposite the cop shop and the other big Streatham pubs (a Wetherspoons, I think). It's a great bar that's been given an atmospheric (but non-wanky) makeover

Based on the version of People's Republic Of Disco we took to the festivals over the last couple of years, rather than people bringing their own tunes* we'll provide a 'menu' of 2000+ tunes for you to choose from, which we'll then play.

Based on tunes that have gone down well at PROD over the years, the selection will be as eclectic as ever, but won't necessarily need to be as banging as PROD is. We'll keep the tunes fresh by updating them all the time as well...

It's entirely FREE and will run from 8pm till closing time (which I suspect is flexible ;) ) and will happen every Wednesday. Comrade Ouchmonkee and I will there to play the tunes and accept your gracious offer of drinks (reasonably priced, by the way!).

This is a big step for us, a weekly night, and we really hope we'll see you down there, especially for the first one which we want to go with a bang. This isn't any kind of replacement for the full PROD - could you ever replace PROD? - think of it as a kind of weekly ideological reprogramming.

God knows, Streatham needs fun stuff to do - especially mid-week - so hopefully this will be a hit.

Watch this space for further details, but stick it in your diary :)

(* there's no reason why you shouldn't bring the odd tune if you really want to hear it, mind - we're flexible types)

Yes! Something fun to do on a Wednesday evening! I get thursdays off so expect to see me out a bit more regularly :)

i have seen the future

a happy combination of spanglechick and exercise.

quick drive to streathan, couple of hours boogie for the price of a few bottles of water.

Dub, baby - i think you have found y'selves a regular  :D

Good on ya fella - was down the White Lion checking out the refurb a few weeks back and it was looking good indeed.

I'll try and set a few of Streatham's reprobates in your direction - gawd knows they've been starved of decent venues of late. And we'll even try and make the long hop from Brixton ourselves...

well this is it - when i was with Furvert, i spent half my life in Streatham and there was NOTHING to do there. even the local pubs were converted into chain pub shitholes.

so hopefully, with this - and all the other stuff they've got going on there (and possibly a monthly dub night i'll be running :) ) - we can make Streatham fun again :)

i like streatham in general, but the nightlife is pretty uninteresting - we ended up drinking in that cocktail bar (baroque?) quite a bit, simply because there was so little else of interest there.

it does have the best curry house in the world though.

even Baroque - which i didn't mind (good mojitos) - has gone now, replaced by Mint, which is similar but worse.

Pukka?

nah, pukka is ok, but the spice cottage on the corner of mount ephraim road is much better. plus Prov who owns the place is a thoroughly nice chap. :)

think i'm due a visit soon...

ah, Spice Cottage is good, yeh. haven't been in ages. (that's Furvert's road.. ) Pukka used to be better, but there was some split and it went downhill a little

furvert lives on mount ephraim road? i lived at number 37 for the summer of 2003... how bizarre.

very very few doors away indeed. and since i virtually lived there for that time, we were virtually neighbours :D

Blimey, forgot all about Spice Cottage. Not bad at all - one of my old mates worked there for many a year and I paid it a fair few visits.

I'm not sure why Streatham's so bad for drinking establishments. The other week a few old friends were going to meet in a coffee bar on a Friday night for Christssakes...

well i'm moving there tonight, so i'll let you know. And where i'm moving is almost on Tooting Bec common, so we've got Balham very near as well :)

'bout time something happened in Streatham really...next up PROD on the Common :D

Streatham the new Balham? Could possibly be...minus upper class tools in their new Minis and annyoign parents with off road buggies. The day they open a Foxton's i'm outta there!

saint reatham is always going to be too 'edgy' to do a balham proper - it's got caesars, ffs.

i always did fancy checking out the cage dancing.

I didn't know Balham was posh. I always associate Balham with bedsit land...who was that nerdy welsh bloke who lived in Balham, was he part of the Mary Whitehouse Experience, or Lee and Herring? The council tax in Balham is well cheap an' all.

But anyway, Juke Joint! Records! Booze! People! Get in! Or something.

I might come. I am the blight that never goes out.
