People who rent 1 bed flats in London - how much do you pay?

Following on from my other lengthy thread here, I'm curious to know, given that London rental prices are currently going mental, how much other people pay for similar properties in London, and whether your rent has massively increased recently.

So this is a question specifically for people who live alone in 1 bed flats in London.
I'm just curious (and partly scared) to find out.

I feel as though if I didn't have savings, I'd actually have no choice but to leave London. Or move into a grotty house share and live in a box room.

900 a month in zone four. bargain! but i only moved recently from a very cheap room in brixton which was 500 a month. when i moved the rent was put up to 550. which is why my partner and i moved to zone four!

    You might find this useful.

FWIW, house prices in Walthamstow according to that database (so take with a hefty dose of salt) have increased by 5.81% in the last year and 10.21% in the last three years. House prices and rental costs have a long-term relationship to each other, but in the short-term they can actually move in opposite directions. Still, in the absence of anything else, it gives you an idea of what you are up against.

Fuck me - when I stopped renting I was paying half that for a large 2 bedroom flat - what would zone 2 be?

The one that I linked to -- the database of registered house sales.

They take their price movements by looking at the movement in the average price, which makes it very susceptible to which houses specifically have been sold that month. But over a large enough area and a timescale, it's not a bad estimate.

House prices in London as a whole have gone up like crazy in the last year. I've been hearing about double-digit rises in a single year, and 20%+ over the last three years.

Almost exactly a grand a month, in zone 2 with good transport - but it's way under the odds for the area, if I had to move it would be at least two hundred more.

    eta: no bills included

    Innit!

Only moved recently. The listing was a bit odd (gave the council tax all wrong) and we offered under the asking price.

Wowzers. The last London flat I rented was a one bedroom in zone 2 for £500 a month.
Just over 10 years ago now mind.
I just would not be able to afford todays prices at all.

Up until May this year we paid a grand with no bills for a pretty big but also quite shoddy ground floor Victorian flat in SW2, decent size garden/jungle included. This was widely considered to be a steal, and current rents would probably be at least 50-75% higher.

    Same.
Last time I rented was 10 years ago.
2 double bed garden flat in zone 3 opposite Tooting Common.

Average back then was £500 per room.

It does, and a monthly subscription to the print edition of the nekkid thread.

Tbh, it's not that expensive for round here, price slightly hiked by parking space and big rooms...

We pay £650 a month plus about £200 on top for bills.

It is a small tatty old flat though. We don't have a private entrance and the kitchen + living room are less than two rooms.

That's getting more sensible (is what me and a couple of friends paid for a 3 bedroom flat in listed building with massive tended garden in non-London a few years back).

I'm amazed there aren't landlords hanging from lamp posts down there.

£800 in z3. Bills & CT on top.

I really feel for you Hellsbells :( I had a grotty flat in perfect z2 area and landlady decided to sell and in the four years I'd been there I got priced out. Now in gorgeous flat in WRONG area

marty21 One on one? You're crazy.

I haven't rented privately in about 20 years - it would be difficult to afford it now

£675 excl. bills for a two bedroom in Plumstead. Fairly serious damp problem and the transport links aren't great, but well aware that it's still a pretty good deal for what it is.

What are you lot fucking doing to London? Sounds like you're making a right pigs ear of it if this sort of shit is going on. Sort it out pronto or i'll get another load of people in to look after all the palaces and museums and shit.

I'm not sure there is really any need to be a prick about it.

    Holy shit..... 1 bed, zone 4, a grand & a half a month?

Why not get somewhere for £1000/month, stick the extra 500 in a savings account - after 2 years you'd have £12k, which is a 5% deposit on a £240K flat....
