pedestrians - why...?

...don't you thank cyclists who stop for you at zebra crossing...yet thankfully wave at car drivers? hum?

I don't wave at car drivers. One shouted at me in waterloo for not saying thank you.
I ran back to his window and said "sorry sorry, thank you so much. I would also like to thank you for stopping at traffic lights, driving on the left and not mounting the curb and mowing down pedestrians like me. Keep up the good work with obeying the highway code and all that. Thanks".

It was quite well rehearsed because I had failed to say it to another driver only a week before and thought about what I should have said the rest of the way to work.

Well if we're all going to bitch about zebra crossing etiquette... :D

it does annoy me a bit when cyclists who ride over a zebra crosing without dismounting (which isn't actually allowed unless it's a special designated crossing) don't bother waving or nodding thank you, even though traffic is not obliged to stop for them at all.

Though not as much as the idiot pedestrians who decide to stand right by the crossing to have a phone conversation/wait for somebody/hail a taxi, causing every passing vehicle to stop.

They are not cyclists. The correct technical term is suicides.

The most idiotic cyclists I saw the other day were trying to squeeze between a stationary bus and the bus I was on - cycling the wrong way! Two of them as well, if I had been the bus driver I would have shouted at them.

gor, cyclists eh?

FWIW peds often say thank you at zebra crossings to me, in fact one stopped mid crossing last week and waved me through! Some people are really nice. (I didn't go through, I was already stopping, before you start.)

Altho I have also seen the look of shock when a cyclist stops. Which isn't a good sign really.

I've had some peds who think that it's okay to step in front of me (not on a crossing, I should add). It's as if they regard me as a pedestrian who is on a bike and not as a cyclist.

I'm a cyclist and I like stopping for peds, cars, lorries, rainbows. It confuses the crap out everyone, like some kind of two wheeled anarchism.

Yeah, I think that was why one particular man with his young son looked so grateful and told me I didn't need to stop. Which is :( that he didn't have that expectation, but I think I might have helped make his day by stopping for him and saying "nah, it's totally cool and you're right of way" with a big smile. Odd really, but there did seem like a split second connection in rush hour London.

I've unintentionally not stopped once, just because the zebra was on the dip of a hill and I had already been stopped by traffic at every hill dip I had come across. I felt so guilty afterwards I vowed never to do it again. :o

When I'm in pedestrian mode I thank everyone who stops at a zebra crossing. Even though technically no thanks is required, since traffic is obliged to stop, I think it's just good manners.

Equally, when I'm on the scooter or the car and about to turn onto a side street, and a pedestrian sees me indicating and stops to let me go through, I thank them.

The difference being in the latter case you definitely should thank them, because the law says it's you who should be giving way to them.

Most peds say thanks to me, with a very surprised look on their face, because most cyclists around here ignore peds on zebra crossings...

i find because i pause to make sure people are going to stop a lot of cyclist take that as a sign to not stop

i don't like to step in front of someone who is still moving

Bikes don't need to stop, they need to give way. This can usually be acheived by slowing down and cycling behind or far in front of the pedestrian, as long as the pedestrian is not caused to slow down or alter course.

Except for those peds that don't start to cross until I come to a complete stop at the crossing, despite me having slowed down and they have had plenty of time to stop wasting both out time - guess they find it hard to judge speed of something.
