Peaceful protesters pepper sprayed and beaten at the Republican Convention

Or he could have broke ranks, which I understand they're not supposed to do, and escort her off to the side. It's really hard to imagine there wasn't any dialogue between them. When cops move on streets like that they do tend to tell people what's going on as in what to do such as 'get to moving'. The city has the right to kick everybody off the street if things get broken and smashed. I think that's a point of contention here. You don't want to cede them that authority and that way it's all fascism on their part. Certainly peaceful protesters are going to be included with the rest but it's not practical to expect the police to work out who did what. There are no citizen spying cameras installed on the street corners. Even then it'd take too long for everyone. So everybody gets moved.

And it takes someone submissive to irrational authority to continually accept that she deserved to be maced.

Whether you think it's over the top or not, I think that anyone that confronts riot police in a public order situation can expect that they're not going to be treated with kid gloves.

Honestly, you push people, they push back. That's how it works and of course the lady in question knows that.

But see that's the thing - I don't see the city as being irrational even though innocent protesters are going to be removed from the streets along with the vandals. I think the city has every right to say it's over. Unfortunately that's how it is when it's totally impractical to pick out in real time the few that are guilty. There was a case just last Saturday of cops beating the hell out of some kids and it even took a couple days just to find out who the cops were. So I don't fault the city for using a blanket rule. Thing is, when they tell you to get off the street you have to comply and it's not fascism on their part. Neither is it party political. Most of those cops could be Obama supporters. I'm hardly submissive. I'm usually arguing against the police but in this case with the girl I think she brought it on herself as much has anything.

Hahaha

It takes a particularly naive person to think she got maced because the cop thought the flower was threatening.

The only person in this thread suggesting that the cop genuinely thought the flower was threatening was you.

Why would the cop need to break ranks to move her to the side? She was already at the side, not in their way.

The city may have the legal right (though I'm not so sure they do), but, IMO, they do not have the moral right to treat all citizens like criminals because other people were damaging property. Honestly, follow that train of thought and we should all get sent to prison right now because someone in our borough has committed a crime.

@untethered: if the police see holding a flower up as a 'confrontation,' then they need anger management training. It's the sort of thing they should be able to just roll their eyes at or ignore.

BTW, one of the other video clips shows a guy with cerebral palsy who's been pepper sprayed. Pepper spray is especially dangerous to people with compromised immune systems or lung damage. But I bet dilute_micro will say that was fine, too.

She was clearly in their way. Look where she is at 0.15. She's about three cops over into the street. Then look at the guy spraying the mace at 0.30. His head and arm are turned towards her and he's aiming diagonally into the street where she is.

Your opinion on morals is fine. That's your opinion.

And no I don't think the guy with cerebral palsy should get harmed. Maybe they could compromise and whack somebody standing next to him a few times.

hehe... i know a journo who got pepper sprayed at this, but think he's a cock so is that wrong? i dont care - hehe

The guy further behind, who sprayed her, is closer to her, because the police line broadened. But she was a couple of cops in front and was walking backwards with her hand outstretched, not in their way.

It's opinions on morals we were talking about here - what else did you think it was? Your opinion is that cops can spray people for no reason. You have a right to your opinion, of course, and I have the right to say that your opinion makes you a very damaged individual.

She was clearly in their path and about 3, then 4 persons in from the extreme left end of the police line. The guy on the end sprayed her at 0.30. She was in their way. I think you're the damaged goods for not being able or willing to see it. My opinion is not that cops can spray people for no reason. ;)

If she was in their path, then they wouldn't have been able to continue walking straight ahead, like they did. This beside the point, in any case, since being in someone's way doesn't give them the right to use force against you.

This is the limit to how far I'm prepared to discuss this with you.

I fear DM, as intelligent as he is in some respects, has well and truly had his consent manufactured for him, to such a degree, that sadly like so many others, he is unaware that it has even happened.
