PC vs Mac

No, you can. It's just that Parallels doesn't support accelerated 3D, so if you want that, you have to reboot into Windows proper.

I've played a few PC games on my imac booted into Windows, it works just fine. The graphics are some midrange ATI thing, so nothing spectacular.

Ah, I see.

I think the latest version of parallels does? I did hear something about that, havent got round to testing it yet though.

I run parallels to run sopcast (for the football). Works fine.

Man, another mac vs pc thread, it seems to have only been moments since the last one.

It's all about the OS really, what do you prefer? You have the choice of all of them on the mac and Xp and Linux on the PC. PCs are easier to mess about with hardware wise, mac's are usually more like buying a tv, it comes as it comes with only the Ram able to be changed. Unless you pay through the nose for a macpro, which are pretty competitive with other off the shelf machines. Certainly the build quality is superb. My gfs macbook is noisier than my macpro (when using the hardrive) and I've 4 hardrives and two 4-core processors.

I personally think the apple laptops are overpriced but I need OS X so if I needed a laptop I'd get a decent Macbook (not the pro - no need if you've a desktop and they're too much money, man).

For the record I wouldn't be fussed what OS my laptop runs, just so long as it does what I need - so if anyone's got a spare MacBook Pro they don't want, I'll be happy to take it off their hands. :D

I'd cover up that fucking ridiculous glowing Apple logo straight off though.

Is it free to add OSX to a PC then? cool
Why would I want to increase the cost of buying a laptop by installing two commercial operating systems?

In fact, why would I need to install another OS at all when the one I've already got does everything I ask of it?

You do know that (a) you can't see it when you're using the laptop and (b) other manufacturers (E.g Dell) have logos in the same place...

Testing, when you want to know it 100 % works on the other o/s browser (and don't trust betas)...

But they're generally not lit up like a fucking Christmas tree and turning the user into an illuminated advert for the manufacturer.

Sledgehammer. Meet nut. And where did the OP say they needed to indulge in cross platform testing anyway?

Did I mention my full-spec Macbook Pro is 24 carat gold?

I've noticed that my current PC sometimes is going to at least 50% CPU usage with various Norton files recently. It's now two years old and has 2Gb of RAM... it's one of those machines which seems to rev up the fan when it's working harder than usual, so I look at the Task Manager to see what's going on. I also seem to have lots of annoying auto-rebooting going on, only when the machine is just switched on. Once it's had about 20 minutes of being switched on, it stops rebooting.

Dust can really kill a computer. Before you rush out and but a new PC or Mac it might be worth investing in a can of compressed air, opening up the case and blowing out the dust.

All irrelevant to the OP's question.

The OP mentions tools commonly used for web design. Previous posts by the OP indicate he/she is interested in web development. One can therefore suppose that one of the uses of his/her computer might be web design. And best practices are always a good idea...

If the OP hasn't been scared off already, perhaps they might want to clarify their use of the computer. Instead of being told...?

You're the one lecturing them about "good practice" and insisting that they simply must install two operating systems on their new machine.

Instead of telling them what they should do, why not ask what he/she wants their machine for first?

Eh...? I've said its a good idea to test web-design on multiple browsers. One ways of of doing that is dual booting. Another would be install all three mainstream browsers concurrently. I'm hardly "lecturing" them...

Urb without getting involved to much in the normal flame war...

I havn't got anything bad to say about macs apart from maybe cost, don't use one myself, but that down to the fact I know my way round xp and like to play games. Things to consider are can you be bothered to learn a new os and how many of your mates use a mac and how many use a pc. Ie who can you call if you have a problem?

My old dear runs here pcs to the ground and gets about 5 years use out of them, always buys from a small computer computer shop near us who make them, yes she could get the same bits cheaper (same with macs), but she can call in to see them if she has problem (very rare). Think the only reason she upgraded last time is she wanted a bigger moniter. :D

TBH honest unless you do some intense photoshop stuff your machine is probably fine, just needs some sorting. Do you have any mates who know anything about pcs? They may be able to fit you some silent fans very cheap if your old ones are dying. Your machine shouldn't reboot all the time, post some more details and I'm sure someone can help.

With a little sense about what you download you dont need a virus scanner or spyware remover sitting in the background all the time, I just run it once a week, uses a lot less resources that way.

I always think its a bit unfair when people compare bargin basement pcs like those sold in pc world with nice macs, spend a bit more on a pc or get a home build and I think they are as good, but personal prefence again really. That said my cheap acer laptop is still going strong 5 years later, other then the battery, but would be supprised if macs didn't have the same problem.

I'd try and sort you machine out before spending loads on a new machine.

"If". That's a handy word. I wonder what it means...
FFS: how much longer are you going to pointlessly bang on about cross platform testing and web testing?

No one's mentioned it
, so until the OP says otherwise, it's a totally irrelevant distraction.
