Question PC help in Oxfordshire

I've tried to get him to back up. I've bought him memory sticks and tried to show him how to do it. But no, I don't think he does back up.

:(

not good if he's working on a big document (like his memoirs)

if all else fails, could you get him firstly to do it in smallish documents (so that if the document gets buggered it's not the whole thing) and then to e-mail the latest chapter to the sort of e-mail account that stores everything online now and then?

when i'm working on something fairly critical, i tend to e-mail it to my yahoo e-mail account at the end of each day

I suspect he will hate Win10 too. As well as it potentially trashing a load of things that he is familiar with. My trackpad stopped working and I had to reroute all my sound settings which took a lot of time, both those things involved manually searching for and downloading the right drivers.

If he's happy and familiar with what he already has then it might be best to get somebody to optimise his machine, check it's got no nasty shit on it and leave it be. And that's quite easy to do remotely.
I kind of agree. But I can't do that.

My father thinks I'm a computer expert because I say things he doesn't understand and I can buy John Lewis gift cards (I spent ages patiently taking him through each step for him to do it himself but it all went wrong at the end and I have no idea why so I did it on my computer with his credit card. This is a fairly typical exchange between myself and my father.)

I did ask him to email it to me as he wrote it, but he hasn't sent me any for ages.

We are keen for him to write his story just for us.

Can't suggest he doesn't upgrade to Win 10 or can't suggest remote support and a proper system clean?

Either way, you might do a remote fix with some PC maintenance company and make sure you're sat with them and you're the one on the phone to him while its all happening.

I meant, I can't be the person working remotely on his computer.
