I've been getting some pop-ups, ad windows opening unbid, etc etc ...

Any recommendations to clean out the shit that's on my machine now and block ads in the future?

Should I buy some antivirus gear or is it ok to just go with windows defender etc (what I'm doing now)?

    1. Stop going on dodgy sites.
    2. Start with free version of malwarebytes.
    3. Try CCleaner also.
    4. Reset PC How to Reset Your Windows 10 PC

*Edited, changed article as it gave the reboot instructions, this can be done from the settings screen now.

I only use defender, my experience of bought AV software is that it slows the machine down whereas I have never experienced any slow down with defender.

I think it was fez909 who recommended ublock origin (free ad blocker) on a similar thread a while ago, seems to work a treat  try that?

I'm crap with IT btw and found t easy to sort :)

So I installed and ran Malwarebytes and it's blocking Ghostery, saying "website blocked due to fraud".

Just exclude and download it anyway?

sometimes you do get false alarms, but it may depend where you are trying to download ghostery from.

there are legit sites for open source software, there are dodgy ones
