Paying for school dinners using fingerprints

How would you suggest I approach this then? After all, nothing I say is going to change it. Do I just refuse to let her be fingerprinted?

Well, that's what I'd do. But you imply it's already been done?

I'd kick up merry hell about my kids being fingerprinted without my consent, and those fingerprints entered into a database, again without my consent.

I don't think it's been done yet. I'll ask her in the morning. :)

Good.

I'm not telling you what to do, but if it was me I'd be making it very clear to the school it was never going to happen. And then canvassing support from other parents to take a similar stance.

If you trust the security methods, then see if she wants to do it. Mine always hated it when I took a stand and wouldn't let them do something. They really didn't like it - they just wanted to do what everyone else was doing.

Besides, security aside, it sounds kinda cool and I'd let her try it out.

What exactly do you think that they are going to do with the fingerprints that has you so concerned?

yeah, they old boys wre never shy with the donations plus they had the investors in people cash, a lot of land bought over the centyries etc etc.

Did you go? I spent 5 rather dull years there. I don't think all male environments are a good idea and would never inflict on kids. Far to much testosterone floating around.

Mine mainly went there as it was the only upper school in the vicinity !

Proper up it's own arse it is too !

Who says they can't?

Ben Goldacre showed how to in the Guardian a while back - data, to printout of fingerprint, onto gelatine.

they go into loads of detail about how it can't be done and the prints themselves are never stored anywhere... but yeah, it's a bit suss.

at the school i worked at parents were warned in advance and could opt out. their kids were given a swipe card instead. not many did. i'd say about 2%? maybe less?

What good that do if they are just numbers that can't be turned back into fingerprints? Or have I missed something.

The thought of children being fingerprinted who will then go onto become adults familiar and accepting of the right of Authority to scan your prints isn't one that comforts me. The terminal five fingerprinting attempt was declared unnaceptable. Call me paranoid but I don't want companies and government having my travel and life details tied to a handy database, and companies will have it because the whole shebang will be outsourced:hmm:

I went, hated every 4 years. The saving grace was a good english department. When I was there it was a school full of rugby/school spirit/cunts

a few good lads, but fuck knows what sadist sends an adolescent nerd boy to an all-male school. Oh yeah, me mum

Exactly.

We have had this issue at my kid's school.

It was fair enough, they were trying out this technology and I am in no doubt that all prints would have been destroyed as they promised, but no.

Call me weird but I opted out.

I don't want to teach my kids to hand over their unique bio-data to anyone, especially fingerprints. That's bullshit. What next - retina scans?

They'll make do with a postdated cheque that bounces every now and then like they've always done.

No son of mine is going to supply fingerprints in exchange for food!

It's the principle of the thing. I just feel deeply weird about it, and I want to impress that upon my lad. Fuckwit corporate ideas to make life easier for them isn't necessarily the right thing to comply with.

If The Man really want my boy's prints, they can handout free science kits to each kid and take them off the pipettes after everyone's gone home, like any other normal over-invasive stupidly authoritarian government would.

At least there's a trade off!

Besides - I don't want him eating the shit he gets served at the canteen.

He gets a packed lunch and likes it. His choice too, bonus!

um, has the quality of the food in school gotten better? its was bad when i was going. the pizza on thursdays was ok and everyone looked forward to that but only because everything else was shit.

This sounds about right. I think I had lost touch with everyone I knew in a matter of months of leaving.

Very true. I think they wanted to be a private school.

I got my head kicked open in snowball fight whilst in year 10. I wasn't that bothered, its what kids do, but it looked really dramatic, loads of blood everywhere. Was waiting by reception for me mum to come pick me up and the head came round the corner and went nuts at me for fighting.

Mins later my mum walked in and he couldn't apologise enough the two faced cunt.

Oh I'm still hacked of years later having to pick history or geography. I've got a GCSE in ceramics for whatever good that is.

What a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!

couldn't they use it for hiring more teachers/getting more sports equpt/books or something actually useful?

fucking hell! :confused::hmm:

school don't pay for it.

edit - firm supply hardware and take a cut of transactions. but in nearly all schools this is paid for by the external catering company - few schools run their own kitchen contracts.

If the catering company pays for it, then that means the parents pay for it. They should use the money to give the kids better food instead ;)
