PAYG Oyster on south London trains in 2009?

All london trains are supposed to accept PAYG by the end of this year. FCC aims to have Thameslink done by September.
Southern are still dragging their heels

Southern have one of the nicest rolling stock, but seem to the ones dragging their heels the most. Integrated public transport meets private sector profit motive = guess who wins?

In Watford outside Greater London we've been able to use Oyster PAYG on the Met since the Oyster scheme launched, and from Watford Junction on London Midland into Euston and Southern to Clapham for the last 18 months, AFAIK since Silverlink Metro was rebranded as Overground, it's ludicrous that South London can't use it on their local trains.

N. London has the tube in competition with trains, so the TOCs had big motivation to Oysterise their network. Not so in the South :(

What's especially stupid is that if you are going from stations like Wimbledon to Vauxhall where the stations have Oyster readers you can't use PAYG.

Dunno if it's PAYG, but Carshalton station's recently installed Oyster barriers were in active use for the first time on Friday evening.

[painfully slow, as there used no barriers at at all and a wide-open side exit closer to my bus stop which is now gated shut and everyone has paper Travelcards]

I was on the train going to Sutton from there on Friday just after 6, it was hilarious watching people rush through the doors, and then a queue promptly spill out onto the platform as they didn't know the barriers had gone live. They needed more the 3 barriers. As 1 for entry 2 to exit won't work for the number of people that get off of the train there in PM peak. Funny to watch though.:)

Saw this posted on another local board from a genuine source:

Can I just confirm that the Metro Area will go live September 2009. You will find over the next few months more and more readers being installed. It is my belief that it would be better if it all went live at the same time. In addition I am sure this goes for Southeastern Railway also

Hope this helps

Barry Jones works for Southern, I believe.

Fwiw, it looks like full steam ahead on Oyster readers being installed on the Southeastern line through Herne Hill to Beckenham and beyond. Kent House Station (between Penge and Beckenham) had readers installed 9 weeks ago now.

I did read elsewhere the Chair of Southeastern saying Oyster PAYG fares would be no cheaper than existing fares . . . no date on that footnote, though.
