Pavement cycling - On the spot fines.

post tenebras lux
I was cycling back home yesterday evening and went onto Stokey High Street to do some shopping. I was cycling up the pavement when I saw two police officers so I hopped off my bike. They told me they were now operating zero tolerance and the next time they saw me I'd get a £30 fine. Has anyone else heard about this? Will they be issuing fines to all the kids who ride on the pavements round Hackney? Shouldn't they be out shooting innocent people rather than harassing cyclists?

when I was couriering one policeman used to stop me regularly cycling through leicester square. he always gave me the "next time it's a fine" line too.

still... it's a bad thing. cyclists shouldn't be on the pavement.

it's dangerous.

unless you're going really slowly. :)

I've gotta say, I kind of approve...
Obviously there should be some age limitations, so that kids can still cycle safely on the pavements, but I do think it's wrong for adults to do so.
Pavements for people!

this is really annoying, almost as annoying as the cyclists dismount signs you get on roads, soon it will be like tiananmen square all over, a cycle free world to allow smoother car congestion

I'm in total agreement, and I'm a cyclist. I get really annoyed by cyclists who can't make up their minds whether they are pedestrians or cyclists. For example, if you want to use a pedestrian crossing, fine, but get off your bike and push it!!

As AG said, pavements for people!

a mate of mine got done for that a few years ago, it wasn't an on the spot crime, he was stopped by a policeman, he had freewheeled about 20 yards (i think he was near marylebone) my mate is a bit too honest, so gave him all his correct details, they sent him a fine, he decided to challenge it in court, he came over all perry mason and defended himself...

result, fine plus costs:(

It's amazing how cyclists who break traffic laws sound exactly like motorists who do the same.

The ones who are motorists should sound exactly the same, cos they are.

pavements are completely useless for cycling on anyway - usually too bumpy, people in the way, trees and signposts - potholes are usually worse than on the road - and you lose your right of way.

I don;t know why anyone does it.

I know you shouldn't usually cycle on pavements, but it's a one-way street, I was going about one mile an hour and there were hardly any pedestrians around. I reckon they've just hit on a new way to make a bit more money.

are you sure it wasn't PBP on the wind up?

If they want to make money round Hackney they should introduce an on the spot fine for lorries and buses jumping red lights.

IIRC those under 17 are legally allowed to ride on pavements, but adults are not, which is fair enough.

Isn't it something to do with the size of your wheels?

Actually, it can't be, cos BMX'er would be able to cycle on the pavements under that law, innit.

Excellent - ask a question then answer it all in one post. ;)

get of the pavement gc. ;)
Unless that adult is teaching the child to ride :(

My dad got bollocked years ago by the lancs police for riding on the pavement. I was 7 and on my first two-wheeler ever, my old man was cycling alongside and steadying me at the same time

People shouldn't cycle on pavements but, driving a car on a pavement is surely many times more serious. There are thousands of cars parked on pavements and the cops should deal with them before they deal with the pavement cyclists.

When there are decent cycle paths that allow people to ride safely around town, that's when people will stop riding on the pavement.
