Paul Russell commands building of an indoor beach

Nice one.

What are you going to do with it after the exhibition's over BTW?

I mean, how does one dispose of 3 tons of sand?

Sell to a builder cheap :)

Edit to add another fact............

The Mayor of Slough is coming..............................

......so is the leader of the council. Interestingly, they didn't come last time when we didn't offer them free booze.

Or maybe it's Paul's reputation which has drawn them in :D

Should be a funny evening - I had a request from the mayors office to complete a form asking what we thought he should wear to the event. Needless to say I delined to fill in the form......honestly they have a FORM for stuff like that. Bless those beaurocratic masters of efficiency.

nah, fill it in, you know you want to

tell him to come in a dress suit and mayor's bling with all the chains and stuff for the photos.

I like having photos of people I work with alongside mayors, I've got loads of em.

It's also easier to get press coverage if the mayor is there wearing the gold chains and stuff and the mayors like to have their chains if they know the press will be there. AFAIK most town halls have different gold chains, some more subtle, some full on bling, I'd go for the bling personally :D

Tell him to wear his swimming trunks.

Can't make it Friday, but will definitely try and make it down soon. Am only up the road in Ealing

Actually, the protocol PDF looks a bit daunting!

I find thing like that a lot of fun.

Loads of people don't know the proper etiquette and protocols so it's only really the organisers who have to learn them and it's not that hard to learn. For you all you need to know is to call them Mr Major or Madam Major if it's a woman.

IME it's the mayor's entroage who are much more concerned with protocols than the mayors themselves, many of whom freely enjoy the gratis alcohol and get very tipsy quite rapidly.

If you find out a bit about the Mayor by googling before you meet him you can chat about various things that he's interested in and then get invited to other civic events which can be a worthwhile thing if you want to forward your career, or maybe not, depending on what his interests are.

Some mayors are absolutely lovely, the best one I've met was Jill Rhodes the then mayor of Hillingdon. I was invited, with some colleagues, to a big party at the Mayor's Chamber after a big music festival. At the festival some of the young people we worked with had written and performed their own songs and poems but they hadn't been invited to the event. So we went inside and asked the Lady Mayor if we could bring the young people with us and she insisted that not only them but their friends could come too. She then spent most of the party talking to the kids and really enjoying herself. She even let one of hte young people wear her chains for a photo. I have some very funny photos of her being silly with various fancy dress costumes and hats when everyone got a bit tipsy later that evening but I'm too diplomatic to post them up. ;)

The former Mayor of Camden, Nasim Ali is a great guy too. Not as much of a laugh as Jill Rhodes but someone who really genuinely cares about the people of Camden and has achieved some incredible things for young people inteh borough. His favourite song is Imagine but hey, nobody's perfect :D

Thanks for the advice.

So, I'll leave it to the gallery to introduce him as "The Worshipful the Mayor of Slough", and then I'll call him Mr Mayor (he's a man...)!

he's called Dave, and that's how he'll be addressed by me. He can wear what he likes - he can like us or not. his choice. not going to chage our behaviour to suit others/ protocol.

Frankly, I wont be chatting to him about his interests - far too much to talk about telling him how great Gallery 435 are and how lucky we are to have an artist as great as Paul.

:)

Tomorrow?

Today is Wednesday and the private view thing is on Friday. Isn't it???

The details/directions are here.

http://www.gallery435.com/contact.html

I'm think it's about a >30-minute walk from the train station so I'd get a taxi or the bus. Not sure what times the buses run to? Robster?

Is it far from the train station?

I'll be along with a mate tomorrow - just need to know directions.:)

If skim has no contractions in the next 48 hours then I'll be there! Being Ofsteded on Friday, so a very stressful day at work -- all the more reason to escape to Slough and meet the invisible man, aka Paul Russell.

Hey, you mean you dont want your kid to have Slough on their birth certificate?! :D

Ha. I had a mini-panic attack there and had to check what day it was.

Map:

If you're looking for the train station on the map, it's beyond the right-hand edge.

I walked from the station but it's quite a long way, and not conventionally scenic! Anyone got a Slough taxi phone number?

As you can see, there is a bus (no. 1):

http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southeast/berkshirethames/timetables/timetableindex.php

Takes about 10 mins. Last one from Slough station seems to be 6:56.

There's a cab rank outside the railway station. What the locals do though is ring for a cab whilst on the train to meet you outside the O2 building (which is opposite the station too). 01753 820820 or 01753 737737. there all about as bad as each other.

I'd really like to come to this if I can but won't know until Friday afternoon
Can I just ask if it's a smoke-free beach?

ta :)

Good for you ;)

I googled for one of the mayors I was due to met and found out that he'd set up an anti-racist football team to help stop gang violence in the area and a whole load of other really cool things that I'm really interested in and he's the modest type who probably wouldn't have talked about it if I hadn't have asked, so IMO it can be an interesting thing to do, but only if you find out you share common interests / goals

At the hillingdon do I ended up chatting to some incredibly ancient councillor about hunting man eating lions in Africa, the odds against 2 people knowing a bit about the subject and meeting randomly were pretty remote so that was an interesting experience too

Dave looks like he likes dancing thoguh which is a good start :D

There's no way I'm giving birth on that bloody roundabout! ;)

I'm going to wait until tomorrow to see how I feel. I do want to come, but dont have much of an appetite for travel right now, even if it is only Slough. So we'll see :)

Sorry, I'm a little confused by the 'unfortunately'
I'm tobacco intolerant / asthmatic so a smoky beach would not be possible for me. Are you saying that it is smoke free? *hopes this is what you are saying* :)

Exactly - it's a no smoking Gallery. People who want to smoke go and stand outside.

Did you hear that thing on the news today about that woman in Bristol who gave birth in the morning, and got married later on that day. At least, I think so, I was half asleep when I heard that.

Hope it's going well.

I'm planning to come this evening. In case skim doesn't feel up for it, can I have someone else hum "handbags & gladrags" as I step off the train?

Hmm... if Robster is running the gallery that makes him David Brent. Perhaps Paul is the quietly suffering Tim. Guess I could try to be Gareth? I'm definitely not Finchy!
