RIP

Great man...sublime actor, his Hole in the Wall charity did superb work for disabled kids. My abiding memory was when my dad took me to see the Indy 500. I was a huge motorsport nut and so excited that I'd got to meet Nigel Mansell (who was driving for the Newman Haas team). There was this guy sitting in the back of a pick up handing out beer. My dad went over said hi and this guy with the bluest eyes turned to me and said "sorry kid, I've got no cokes...gimme two minutes". He runs off, lets his mate take over on the truck and true to his word bought me a coke.

He then says "hang on...you guys are brits....big Mansell fans huh?" I nodded, kinda shy...."right, I got something for you". He goes into the pit garage brings back a cap, overalls and a signed model car. "have a great time, here's hoping our guy wins huh?" he smiled this amazing smile and I went on my thanking him. I'll have to dig out the photo next time i'm at my parents place of me with Newman. A top guy.

I hated him.... handsome talented bastard. :D

How he never won an Oscar for 'Cool Hand Luke' is beyond me. The 'Raindrops' scene in Butch Cassidy with Katherine Ross is a moment of film wonderment!

Funny how his death has affected people, everyone Iv spoken to has mentioned how sad they were to hear he was dead.:( Meant a lot to a lot of people.

The field was pretty strong that year. Rod Steiger (In the Heat of the Night), Warren Beatty (Bonnie and Clyde), Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate) and Spencer Tracy (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner).

Rod Steiger won all of the major acting awards that year, and it was a very impressive performance.

That's incredible that so many good films were all that close together

Mr Newman was one of the great film actors, and a good example of working hard and doing the right thing

As brilliant as Steiger is in that for me it doesn't conme close to Newman's portrayal. Imho Hoffman is also better In The Graduate.

For the great movies he made, for his charity work, for being proud of appearing on Nixons enemy list, for opposing the Vietnam war and for being an all round decent human being I think the world is a poorer place without him.

Well, even though I was pretty ignorant of his charity work and protests before the obituaries rolled in; I still knew that I'd never heard a bad word spoken about the man, and that that's pretty rare for a big Hollywood star.

I suppose the fact he was a huge superstar while at the same time remained a decent, down to earth, generous individual had something to do with it.

He was a fine person, by all accounts.

A supremely talented actor, a humanitarian and could have made racing cars a career if he had wanted to. Not many folk know about his racing career and that managed a second place at the Daytone 24 Hours and second at the Le Mans 24 Hours as well. Anyone who is highly placed at those races had genuine talent.

RIP Paul Newman. You'll be sadly missed.

He was also a very talented director ; just saw The effect of the gamma rays on the man in the moon marigolds: such a rare movie!
