Parkin

I have not only heard of parkin, but my mother used to make it every year, and I have her recipe somewhere. It's bloody gorgeous stuff. Innit.

I have never actually made it myself, because it is one of those things which I know I cannot make as well as she did, so I have never tried.

Silly, but there you go.

Shall I dig out the recipe?

My mum baked parkin regularly when we were kids and it is good stuff. Had totally forgotten it until I saw this thread though.

The week thing is correct, even Delia said so :)

I love parkin :)

Last year I went a bit parkin mad and made 4 parkin - 2 for my friend's firework party, one for my work and one for my chap's work. I used recipe 11 from this site and it's totally yummy. You do really need to bake it at a low heat for quite a while then wrap it up in greaseproof paper and leave it for a week or so - the longer you leave it the more gooey and yum it goes.

I'm going to experiment with making rhubarb to go with my parkin this year - apparantly that's the traditional thing to have with it.

When my granny was making parkin she used to sing this rhyme

Parkin, parkin
Keeps your belly fri warkin'

no idea what she was on about but I always sing it to myself when I eat a piece :o

you sayin' I'm old
no sorry, I shoudl have put "in my experience" on the end! that's how i think of it, one of those things that's not actually nice and you'd always really want a mars bar or something instead but your grandma gave you it as a treat.

I was only kidding, I am sodding old ( but not that old) :D

I also know what you mean, hence my memory of granny's parkin ditty :D

On one of your bumping trips again?

Nope..

My mum made me great parkin
I got a craving

My first thought was to start a duplicate thread but being a free thinking radical I decided to try using the search function first.

Damn me to hell and blast your superior username :(

were 'avin a bit of a shindig next week for guy fawkes night/election night and reckon im gonna make some parkin

mmmm not had it for about 10 years!

I am up in Yorkshire for Bonfire Night so may try to persuade my Mum to make some. Nice and claggy so you need loads of tea to wash it down with!

The change in the air made me dig out a recipe for it yesterday. Fancy vegan one from t'Guardian, and all. :D

(Also, so much Shirl on this thread. She loved parkin. 💕)

I’ve heard tell of Parkin, but I don’t think I’ve tried it. It’s not a bonfire tradition where I grew up. But then Halloween was the bigger deal where I grew up.

My grandma used to make incredible parkin (and many other baked goods besides). Wish I'd asked her how she made it, though it's possible she just did it from muscle or gene memory

There is a bakery near here that makes it - and a lot of other lovely old school cakes - in those huge trays you used to get school sponge pudding in, as doled out by the dinner ladies. They sell it by weight, which makes a lot of sense to me.
I'll have to go and get some tomorrow because of this thread.
Suggestible, that's me. Easily swayed.
