Paris or Brussels

Nah, fuck Brussels as well. Was bombed to fuck in WW2 and is boring. Except for Cantillon Brewery which is a 3 minute walk from Brussels Midi station and well worth it.

it comes down to food & beer

Belguim - Moules Frite & a galaxy of heady beers

France -Croque mr. & Kronenberg

no contest

I would agree with the folks who say Belgium. I was in Gent recently, and loved it. I also loved Bruges, and recently saw the film In Bruges, which made me want to go back. Both places are more "romantic" than Paris, if only because they are so much smaller, so don't have the big city stuff.

But do check out the Eurostar - it's still running a limited service with trains taking much longer than timetabled, because of the fire a couple of weeks ago...

I went on the day after the fire, by train, ferry, train, train, which will get you to either Paris or Brussels, in fact. There is one more train (takes half an hour) from Brussels to Gent.

Paris

Paris is many things and not just the beautiful bit's in the centre.

This is good reading, will fill any walk around the city with added resonance.

Paris - A secret history

(Just come back through there yesterday, eurostar running fine if a little slower, you just turn up and get put on the first train)

Thinking of treating my girlfriend to a weekend away and would like to go via Eurostar as never used it before. So.....

Paris or Brussels?

I don't really know either city if I'm honest.

lucky her ...try Brussels...all that choccies

Paris is a shithole.

Dirty, no decent open spaces, 'cept for graveyards, massively overpriced, moodie inhabitants, surly waiters.

Eurostar to Brussels lets you continue to any station in Belgium. That leaves you with options of Bruges, Gent, Antwerp, Leuven etc. all lovelycities, with lots to see and loads of decent beer & food at reasonable prices. Plus you can smoke in the pubs

Leuven, not much to see except for the town hall (that is really one of the most beautiful in Belgium and for my taste the most beautiful) and the church and the oldest univ buildings.
Gent is very, very nice place
Bruges, you must do in the winter when it snows
Antwerp... well, I'm biased. My grandmother lived there and I have a house there... and some family still too. I know it inside out and it is "like home" since I was a baby. But it's really a nice place with lots of thing to do.

Sorry, you can't smoke in pubs and cafés, restaurants any other public place in Belgium.

salaam.
