Palestinian Under 19 football team refused entry to Britain

The nana not the peel
The long-planned, much anticipated tour of Britain by the Palestinian under-19 football team has been cancelled after being refused visas by the British government. Read about it here.

This denial of cultural exchange is for me indicative of the treatment of Paestine by the international community. Of course, when the illegal occupiers and Apartheid wall-builders of Israel come to play England next month, we will welcome them with open arms.

This stinks.

All I can find is this.

New UK visa rules halt Palestinian youth football tour
By Ian Herbert
Published: 10 August 2007

Plans by the Palestinian under-19 football squad to tour Britain this month and play against opponents including the Blackburn Rovers youth side, have been thrown into doubt because they are struggling to get visas and find a route out of their own country.

The squad, from a nation where there are no grass pitches and no league and where the £2m national stadium has been bombed, have learnt of new complications in securing visas. They are also seeking an escort to take them across Israel to Amman, in Jordan, from where flights to Britain have been booked.

Do you have anything more recent?

It's far from specific to Palestine. The Sierra Leone national team is always looking to head to the UK to play, but always has to use expat players after being denied visas for most of the team and staff. Although, given that a few always run away every time and international event is on, usually claiming asylum, it's not entirely unwarranted.

Considering the fortune we pay for foreign players it's also a bit counter productive. Savings galore!

Britain often turns down foreign football teams and or players, let alone ones from Palestine, so why single this one out for special attention?

Took the words right out of my mouth!

Nice guys!

E2A: Note to self. Think twice before offering lifts to festys to strangers in case they nick my cigarette lighter, contribute to car wear and tear etc ;)

Sure, but it's the middle east forum, it's obviously a recent bit of news and one worthy of posting, IMO. A 'cultural' event like this is 'a good thing' IMO when the most powerful countries in the world seem set on denying Palestinians a homeland. A good way of countering the 'they're all terrorists' mindset.

I'll give you a lift off the end of my boot if ya like :D

And how's that border terrier of yours?

At the Commonwealth games in 2004 in Australia, the Sierra Leone 400m relay team did a bunk even before competing, turning up two weeks later and claiming asylum on the grounds that their home country was too dangerous, despite the fact that SL has been at peace for 5 years.

There are legitimate grounds for examining visa applications properly. It doesn't sound from the one source we have so far that they have been flat-out denied visas in any case. It is hard for any third world national to get into a Western country, and definitely promptly.

I agree by the way that this sort of cultural exchange should be promoted as much as possible.

Because it is another way to attack Israel and a cover for his anti-semitism.

Oh yeah, forgot it was the ME forum :o

She's grand - still thinks I am the devil. She's a rescue dog so I guess her previous owner must have been a skinny fella in his twenties. She prefers women and old men to young lads.

at peace for five whole years eh? must be a nice safe place to live now then!

Well its still pretty dire but no war so no asylum case:( .I guess they take the view that no one in their right mind would want to go back to palestian if they got out and asylum would have to be granted .Dont know if its anti palestinian or just burecrats trying to make life easy for themselves ?

The OP didn't attack anyone you hateful little cunt. Now get back under that stone

Stinks, but even if they got the visas it's doubtful Israel would let them out without some serious diplomatic pressure being applied. I know four Palestinians who tried to leave. Two had scholarships for masters degrees in Japan and France, respectively, and all the right paperwork but were repeatedly turned back at the border by Israel. One was smuggled out by ambulance on the pretext of needing urgent medical attention in Jordan, and one had the full support of the British Embassy and still nearly didn't get out.

If Israel are allowed to compete in international sporting events it should be on condition that Palestine is accorded the same right. Equally with trade, if Israel gets to trade internationally, it should be on condition that Palestinian goods are allowed free passage also.

Some people take the view that helping genuine asylum seekers is a good thing.

You must be rather sensitive if you call that an attack. Oh, and you'll tell me what was inaccurate or anti-semitic in the OP's statement, I'm sure.

And a homophobe as well as a racist, eh?

Look! It's the ever-pathetic little warren showing the world what a pathetic homophobic twat he is.

And look at his tag line! So controversial!

Is there a bigger loser to be found anywhere on the web? I doubt it!

1. 'Cunt' is far more an offensive term and extrapolated using your logic would imply misogyny by the user of said expletive.

2. Usage of the term 'gay' as a mild form of abuse does not imply someone or something is homosexual, or the user of the term is homophobic.

3. Similarly Using the term 'bwatty bwoy' (as I did in jest and in such a context) as a mild term of abuse does not imply homophobia of my part or could be seen as any kind of attack on gay people.

4. Only in your warped PC-obsessed World would you see this or a similarly mildly abusive terms used in jest such as yid, slag or knob-jockey as either anti-Semitic, sexist or homophobic.

4. Using the the term 'faggot' would be classed as homophobic given the nature of the word something I would not utter as a term of abuse to someone.

5. I have absolutely no problem with gay men and women and believe in equal rights before the law and the freedom to express themselves how they like.

6. You're an Idiot.

Using the term 'love' is a sexist comment!!!???
yes in this entirely textual based medium it's very possible to determine a posters sex by the type face, therefore being adverserial and derogitory to them on the basis of their gender....

Editor i demand forthwidth that you remove all such expressions of sexual politics from the internet before a toltalitarian regime is unleashed upon the world. It has been known for some time that i have attempted to free the textual world form this traynny by my freeform word formation but we now at D.Y.S.L.E.X.I.A (Don't You See Love impliEs seXism In Action) Demand you take action.

Britain would quite happily welcome the Israeli national team to these shores. I smell the strong stench of hypocrisy.

Good article here:
Even more annoying for the residents of Gaza, for over a year they've been under siege, the hospitals have run out of essential medicines, there's no electricity and hundreds of thousands are trapped there, unable to visit family or complete their education if it means leaving the occupied area. The justification offered often comes down to how Palestinian organisations refuse to recognise Israel's right to exist.

Yet the Israelis seem so determined to refuse Palestine's right to exist that they won't even allow them a football team. So what will they allow? Would they let them take part in the Eurovision Song Contest, or would they get the Foreign Office to refuse them entry on the grounds they were "too loud"? Would they let a Palestinian puppy enter Crufts, or would it be refused a visa for being "too frisky"?

So the Palestinian footballers are left with two options. The first is they're calling on people to send a message to the Foreign Office, at King Charles Street, London SW1A 2AH, asking for the decision to be reversed. Or they could organise their next tour to play against Scotland. Then even if they're not allowed to turn up they'll still win three-nil.
