Paleolithic Diet

Atkins was fat and died of a heart attack.
The Atkins /Ketosis diet was based on two different things. Aside from fasting the complete zero carbs (initial phase) option which puts your liver into ketosis is the quickest way to lose weight, but it's not sustainable from a health point of view, and would fuck your kidneys after more than a couple of months. I read somewhere it was used in American hospitals for about 70 years before Atkins if people needed significant weight loss for an operation.

The Atkins ongoing phase which sees limited carbs was really just a way of maintaining calorie deficit as, once the novelty wears off, most people can't just keep stuffing themselves with meat and cheese - unlike sugar. People didn't stick to it as having a whole life with no sugar, bread or potatoes was more than almost anyone could bear....

I finally conceded last year and watched some of Lustig's stuff on fructose and ended up accepting that maybe nudging slightly into ketosis sometimes might not be a terrible thing ... certainly from my perspective of having got obese on fruit juice and cake and having a compromised liver for a bit ...

I think rather than aiming for ketosis, just making sure the sugars you are taking in are compensated for by lots of fibre and sufficient protein will do most of the job a lot more comfortably.

<all disclaimers apply>

I really need to cut back on the refined carbs, myself.

Atkins died after hitting his head after slipping over, not a heart attack.

I did something like his diet and it really worked for a year. Then I realized how miserable I was and sacked it off.

I double checked with Snopes. They listed the idea that his death was caused by a heart attack as "indeterminate." He is on record as having a heart attack in 2002. At the time of his death, two years later, he suffered from congestive heart failure and hypertension. Leaked information from the medical examiner's report suggests he suffered a heart attack before his death, but its difficult to verify since autopsy reports are not public information.

That's the problem with most of these 'faddish' diets. Even if the science is sound (although any strict diet will usually mean you lose weight as you're just cutting out lots of stuff you used to eat, same with the gluten/wheat free ones) if you can't stick to it and make long term changes to your food intake then it'll fail in the long run. Same with exercise programs, anything too much to stick to long term will likely fail.

There's some medical ketogenic diets as well, a friend's kid was on one for very severe epilepsy (not sure exactly the detailed diagnosis). He basically ate meat, dairy, and nuts plus some special medical food. It was full-on though, food was measured out to the gram and recorded, very strict and difficult for the kid to understand - although he did like his sausages and ice cream for breakfast! Was also done alongside medication and was supervised by a dietician and consultant.

Here's a basic overview Ketogenic diet: overview

Yep, that’s the main reason for a keto diet imo.
