Pakistan, Second Test, Old Trafford

He can take wickets. Giles only took ten when on the top of his form last summer.

Thats the key - no way should Giles or Dalrymple be playing on the basis that they might scratch a few runs out every now and again. I can't remember the last time England had a succesful spinner who was their purely on their merit as a spinner. Peter Such had a few decent tests, but probably Tufnel was the last one.

I still am mystified as to why Gary Keedy is so far down the pecking order though.

In fact of the spinners I can remember off the top of my head

Tufnell
Embury (late in his career)
Richard Illingworth
Richard Dawson
Peter Such
Sean Udal
Ashley Giles
Ian Salisbury
Chris Schofield
( + whoever else played a couple of tests and those who like Graham Hick had to shoulder the burden of being the token spin bowler, despite being less than average at county level)

Panesar is one of the most exciting by far - seems to have both control and the ability to bowl in an attacking manner and even (get this...) spins the ball!

Apparently Monty's the first Englishman to take fiver-fer in the second innings of a test at Old Trafford since Underwood in 1977.

I forgot Robert Croft in my list of spinners I can remember and less memorably also Min Patel (test average of over 100 with the ball). Panesar has now got more 5 wicket hauls than Croft anyway. (2!)

Shame - wanted 10 in the match for monty, needs the next two doesn't he. Who was the last spinner who did that for us? I know Giles has never got ten.

Dunno.

Jones just copped one to the knee off Harmy.

Tufnell did it twice, Croft or Giles never did (Giles has got a 9 for though), can't think of who else would have done it between Tuffers and Monty.

(not that Monty has - I suspect Harmison will finish this off before he can)

Kaneria off his pair. Apparently Harmy's figures are his best ever test figures.

E2A apparently it's the first 10-fer at Old Trafford since Laker took 19-90. :D

last 9 wicket haul I can find is

Warne took 9 for 113 in 1997 in the same match that Dean Headley got 8 for about 150.
Needless to say Aus won...
