PA advice needed

Depends on how much you like good sound I guess. If all you want is to hear the tunes then they'll do the job.

The left hand speaker of the PA we had in there last Friday kept cutting out throughout the night - so it can't be any worse than that! And despite all that, we had an amazing night, great atmosphere and crowd response. So I guess all I do want is to be able to hear the songs and for the speaker not to cut in and out at random.

:D

Another option has just come in.

2 Mackie SRM 450/RCF 322A (400W RMS-A/S) Active
1 RCF 705 AS 15" 800W Active sub woofer

I asked for 2 400w subs, but was told this would be what I needed. Maybe that company doesn't have any 400w subs?

Is this any better than the package above? It's about £30 more expensive.

I was using active Behringers yesterday, and although they're a bit shit, they're adequate for a pub gig... just watch out for the oversensitive clipping circuitry.

Not a bad sound all in all.

Cheers pk. Clipping? What's that?

I guess my question is - what's the difference between using two 400w subs and one 800w sub? I assume that using the two 400ws spreads the sound around a bit more, so it's preferable. But would having just one sub be that bad?

Basically, you get a peak in the sound and the circuit cuts out to prevent it from blowing... it kicks in again after you leave it switched off for a bit, but it's a pain in the arse.

This is the active Beringer speakers mind, no idea if the Numark amp will give you the same grief. Best thing is to test it before installing it, if you can.

I'd let you have my kit for the night for free... but I'm in Argentina...

Any thoughts on this anyone? I'm still a little confused as to the difference.

One sub should be fine for your needs - I upgraded to two units because the nights were so packed at the Albert that people were soaking up the bass too readily (plus some bands were putting their bass guitars through the PA).

Bass isn't directional, so you don't need left and right pairs for a full sound.

Great, thank you.
