Oyster stole my money!

And does the TFL website tell me how I can sort it out? Does it bollocks.
I had £10 on it, made a few bus and tube journeys which amounted to a little over £5, and when I went to top it up the other day was told it had nothing on it. The man I spoke to was very reluctant to give me a print-out of my journeys too, but that's by the by.
Anyone else had this? How do I get my money back? DO I get my money back?

If you put it on one of the ticket machines with the big screen there's an option for looking at your usage pattern, maybe thats why they didn't want to faff around doing a printout for you ( obviously wouldn't have hurt for them to mention that to you).

I've had an oystercard stop functioning while it had £10 on it - I couldn't claim it back cos it was unregistered and they didn't tell me before they cancelled the card that you can't claim money back on a cancelled, unregistered card.

They also didn't want to give me the £3 deposit back because the card was 'damaged'

that looks like good reasons to me to fight this card, ordinary people unfortunately don't pay any attention to the big brother arguments. I remember reading about a woman who was being dragged to the magistrates because her card had not registered the journey as she pressed it on the thingy (whatever it's called, I don't use them) even though she offered to pay the #10 on the spot fine after a bus inspection.

Thats soo rubbish.. Something similar happened to me on the tube recently.. the thingy dint read my card.. The inspectors came along and the man said i was trying to jump the fare.. I wasnt! What made it more annoying was that my mum was really ill an had been in hospital i was on my way to see her and was pretty upset already. The man called me a liar and said if i dint pay they would take me to court, FUCKERS! I ened up in tears and everything!

Mmm, interesting...as mentioned on another thread, my very skint daughter lost £5 overnight on an Oystercard...I don't know where she was travelling in her dreams, but it was on public transport because she was a-kip.

The inability to see what is happening to the credit on the card is my main concern over them. I don't mind using them for single bus journeys or whatever where you pass it over the reader and it shows it has taken off £1 or whatever but when it's more complicated you've no way of knowing what it's deducted or why.

Obviously sending everyone statements wouldn't be cost effective, but making readers available, or making some on-line facility available to check your transactions would be nice.

I suspect that it might be time, if it is happening to several people, to question the fact that it is difficult to get a print out of our journeys on the card, which might correspond to the receipts we keep (and I would advise to keep every single one of them from what I see), especially since they've got no problems giving that record to the police on request. perhaps, hassling GLA members about it might be a start.

Oh the embarrassment :o
The thread-starter is my daughter.....

Jenny Jones is the person I'd contact. She's an excellent individual.

that's a good idea. this oyster thingy does not encourage people to take buses. I would say contact your local GLA constituency member as well.

LOL at Mrs M :)

Do you top up online Enid? If so, reply to the confirmation mail they send and detail your complaint. I've done this before and found the people really helpful - good luck

No I don't, I haven't got a credit or debit card?
Anyone got any information about how I can get my money back? I can't afford to lose it :(

I doubt you'll have much luck tbh - I overheard a bloke in the ticket queue with a similar situation to you (about £5 disappeared) & the ticket person was telling him that if he'd been out all day he "could easily have used up £5 without noticing".

I'm also curious to know if anyone has ever managed to get their £3 'deposit' back - I'm on my 2nd card in a year now which is starting to malfunction but they won't exchange it because they say its 'still working'

I was told I'd get my £3 deposit turned into credit if I registered the card. I didn't register it when I got it because I was in a hurry, had stood for 25 mins in a queue and there were loads of people behind me too and only one ticket booth open.

Personally I'm thinking I may get into furious parent mode and sort out Enid's card for her because that will stop her borrowing mine.....

I think this is outrageous, and really puts me off getting one, even though I'll be forced into it eventually because the fares are so expensive. For people on a very tight budget, it is totally unacceptable to loose money like this. In fact I think it's bang out of order that you cannot see what's happening with your card, or find out how much credit you have available.
Surely this system is crying out for change already.

Can you not look at it on the website? I tried the other day and failed, but I assumed it was my incompetence that was involved rather than the unavailability of the information.

another good question to ask to various GLA members, why do we have to pay £3 if we don't want to register our details? if enough of us start stirring shit, maybe some will start paying attention.

On the whole and in defence of oyster, they are pretty damn good, convenient and of course cheaper.

I sympathise with Enid and my second suggestion is for her to call the oyster helpline on 0845 330 9876 . Must say as far as customer care is concerned, these guys have been better than most :)

Just got back from work ..
Got off the train at Vauxhall after getting on a Wandsworth and my "borrowed off the wife for a day " Oyster card wouldn`t let me thru.....

What is this about not accepting pre-paid cards on rail networks....when I last looked when you top up a card you spend MONEY and then the company you are travelling on takes that money....????

So I had to pay cash at the barrier ( which is what they are " phasing out ..eh!)

Think I`ll stick to travel cards ..wish they`d make `em plastic tho`...oh is that an oyster card ..well they don`t do what I want!

.p.
