oyster card swapping thread?

Innocent in Stockwell?

I don't see the relevance of this comment? If you are referring to the Brazilian bloke who got shot, his carrying an Oyster card or not made no difference at all to what happened.

I was just pointing out that I really don't care if "they" (assuming that "they" can be bothered to dig out this precious information) can work out that I took several tubes and buses in a typical month, to a bunch of different places.

So what? It's hardly incriminating that you took the tube to work and back, and took a bus to centre of London and back now and again, is it?

Giles..

I didn't fill anything in for my card, although if I top it up with my debit card I guess The Man will be able to know who I am. Well, sort of, because I could have bought the card for someone else, of course.

I personally feel that most of the info stored on some compooota is available to gov't workers somewhere or another. It's easy to record and store telephone calls as most of them are digitised. As with emails and all of the other <blahs> that we attactch our names too. It would be interesting to see my "profile" on MI5',6,7s database of UK's most wanted boring farts....

You can have a huge collection of oyster cards for free. When you get a new Oyster card every time when buying a weekly travel card. Once had forgotten my card and just bought a new card with one week travel on it, no extra cost included.

In theory you could get every week a new Oyster card for free, but than what is when taking the old with you? Cost more than £3 for a return journey. On the other hand is comes in very handy when having some spare ones, for example when friends visiting from abroad.

For sure it will not stop professional criminals going undected, you can go in with one card and use another one to get out again, no way to detect a completed journey.

For me is just about economic reasons beeing able to reduce staff and avoiding long queues on bus stops.

Forgot to add.
One main reason is for having one is trying to get home from central London in early hours. Somehow I'm never lucky with buses. It happend lots of time that my night bus passed and the coin machine for pre-paid tickets was not working, or not having right chance or whatever. With an Oyster I'm able to jump in into the bus and not having to wait for another half an hour when beeing lucky, mostly not.

now this sounds like and idea ...

make it cost ineffective for them to continue to use a oyster card...

I have no reason to believe I am so important, interesting or revolutionary that The Man will ever want to keep tabs on me.

Well The Man does, which is why he keeps tabs on everyone. All I've suggested is that "he" is asked why he does it, and if he hasn't got a jolly good reason, that he's asked to desist.

I'm a little taken aback by the apathy around here on this issue.

Im just suggesting that innocence doesn't mean there's nothing to fear.

The last time I commented on oystercards, I received loads of personal and unwarranted abuse.. so I'm not going to say anything else.

Apart from...

This thread has reminded me I must check my balance before going back to college/work!

What a rubbish idea - imagine the tube bombers having had your Oyster in their possession through this anonymous swap scheme

yes! then not only would the police have been unable to catch the 7/7 bombers using the information they gave to London Underground in their oyster card registration, but I would presumably have gone down on charges of terrorism despite there being no other evidence against me!!!

or not!!!

You don't have to give address to get an oyster although when my card stopped working I had to fill out a form. I think I had to put my address not sure. It also asked for a 'password' but I never had one so they just gave me a new one anyway. You don't need proof of ID as far as I can remember.

Not daily travelcards...

umm yes. you are entitled to buy a ticket between any two stations of your choice, the departing station does not have to be the one where you buy the ticket. and an all zones travelcardwhether daily, weekly or monthly entitles you to travel on any train inside the zone area, sooo...
