Owning a boat

Against leaks?
Seriously, would it be third party insurance in case any property or persons got injured or damaged by your canoe?
I would bet that the majority of people who take staff like canoes and kayaks out on to the waterways do not have
any insurance and I would be surprised if that many paid the annual licence fee.

How much damage can you do with a canoe???

I imagine you could kill someone with one, put scratches on a car or other boat paint work, put a window through (when carrying it).

"If it flies or floats it's always cheaper to hire."

This is always true in the long run.

(Whilst there is an incredibly horrible misogynist longer version the above is true.)

You either want a boat ... really, really want a boat and nothing will stop you getting one, one way or another, or you don't.

I owned a boat many years. It was only a 21 foot speedboat but by fuck I grew to hate it. It was the biggest money pit I ever bought into.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I sold it, as it likely cost me more in running costs and repairs than I sold it for.
As they say, the two happiest days in a boat owner's life. The day you buy it and the day you sell it.
